  1. I am going to try making boilies tomorrow. Today I'm making bbq brisket.

I read Mario's boilie making articles and got some inspiration from his ideas. I am definitely not making 50 lbs. of boilies while still experimenting, but I'm going to make some and then make some more and go from there until I get a reasonable amount made. I don't have all the ingredients he uses, but I have to start with a basic recipe and then I can tweak it as I go.

    • corn meal
    • wheat flour
    • jalapenos
    • habaneros
    • cayenne powder
    • white pepper powder
    • whole eggs
    • sesame oil

(Making those peppers into a soupy mixture is the part I am most leery of, but other than scorching them accidentally it doesn't sound like you can mess it up too badly.)

I've had my eye on a spot for a couple of years. It's a body of water with lots of carp, but I've never caught a carp there. I am hoping I can draw them to the area I want to fish and improve the odds a little bit. I'm going to try baiting it up for several days before I go fish it. If can't hurt anything and it just might help.

I was going to post the link to Mario's article, but can't find it again.

  2. Captain,

Unfortunately, we're about 4 years too late. My sister in law lived in Kennesaw for almost 10 years. We were there several times each year, but they relocated a couple of years back. But you never know...I have learned first hand that the unexpected happens quite regularly. I have moved more than once on short notice with my employer and it just might happen again. If I get to the area sometime I will definitely touch base and see if I can do some fishing for a nice grasser.

I enjoy your posts and I recently started checking out your videos. You guys have it figured out!

And if you ever get to Michigan and want to try some carp fishing we have plenty of guys to help you find the fish.

  3. I am beginning my 3rd season of carp fishing. I have been tying rigs the last couple of days to prepare for the weather to break. As I was tying some yesterday I realized that I always tie them the same way. I am guessing that might not be the best idea.

The way I tie them is working well for 2 or 3 pieces of corn on a hair rig and it works fairly well with a small dumb bell, but I haven't really had any success at all with a regular 20mm pop up boilie. I'll be the first to admit that I haven't really ever put a lot of thought into it, but for venues that have some vegetation I think I might need to learn some new tricks.

Any suggestions for learning how to tie a proper rig for a pop up? I use a simple bolt rig. It's what I learned first and I haven't learned anything else yet. I experimented last year with some shrink tube in an attempt to keep the hook closer to the boilie, but after hooking several fish that had hook pulls before landing them I gave up on the shrink tube since I obviously didn't know how to use it properly.

I am hoping for some suggestions and/or resources for a better way.

  4. I am going to try my luck making boilies next weekend.

I'm going to try 1 cup semolina or soya flour (whichever I can find), 1 egg, add water until I can roll them into a ball.

    Making some with each:

cinnamon, garlic, cayenne pepper and vanilla

If I can find some bird seed I think I'd mix a little of that in too.

I guess I'll try boiling them for 2 or 3 minutes and then allow to dry overnight.

Any other suggestions for proper technique?

  5. I am familiar with the pink dumbbells available via WCB. I am interested in learning about other dumbbell options. I am looking for high visibility colors like the pink. Are there yellow, orange or white options?

Any suggestions on where to find them from a U.S. based supplier/distributor?

  6. I just returned from a drive down to Sterling. The lagoon and the main lake are still completely frozen over with no access to water at this point, but it is thawing. You can see obvious thin spots in several areas. It will likely be open next weekend, but I hope the water warms up soon.

  7. If you are thinking about purchasing new carp rods, but don't want to break into your savings account to do it check out the prices Resistance Tackle has currently on their Willow, Hurricane and Lightening carp rods.

The Willow is on sale for $78.75

The Hurricane is on sale for $83.99

The Lightening is on sale for $65.99

I have owned 4 of the Hurricane 3.0 test curve since late spring 2014 and have fished them steadily. I really like them. I think the are a good value for the price.

  8. With temps near 40 degrees this afternoon I couldn't resist spooling up the third of my new Sonik 6000 reels today. I bought 50 pounds of panko a couple weeks back and a couple different tackle orders have arrived at this point. It's time to place a bait order or two.

I think I'll stick with the old tried and true; and then try out the new Trilogy products when they come out. I've got that product page book marked.

We've been fishing 4 rods (3 for me and 1 for Linda). Now that she has some experience we're going to 5 rods (2 for Linda). Look out carp; here we come!

  9. I'd suggest North Hydro Park in addition to the list above. The fish aren't huge, but there is plenty of bank space. (You do need back leads there though.) I'd bring BBQ pulled pork, brisket, drinks if we decide to have one there. In fact, I can bring those items to almost any fish in and I'd be happy to do it.

I love Sterling Sate Park and fished there about 30 times last year. The one downside is available bank space where everyone can fish together. It's kind of spread out. If you have 10 guys they could not really fish together and socialize as a group.
