Andy, Maybe when I was a little younger, but I'm not sure I can drive 21 hours straight. I have relatives along the way so hotel in route is not an issue. The more we've discussed it tonight I don't think it will be as expensive as I first thought. We would have to rent a vehicle though because I wouldn't trust our Explorer down there and back (175k miles on it).

I have been penciling out some estimated costs for potentially making the trip to fish the ATC next year. I am guessing at least $2,000 for two of us to fly from Michigan to complete in the event including air fare, shipping equipment, food, lodging, etc. and roughly $1,000 to rent a vehicle and drive (I have free places to stay along the way).
Any ideas for making the trip on a bare bones budget?

Nik Williams caught it. 44 pounds.

I was in McAllen the week before. Next year I need to make the trip to McAllen coincide with the ATC in Austin.

I watched the results regularly on Friday and Saturday.

The northern states have predator fish better suited for weeding out the little ones, here in Indiana lakes that have good pike and Muskie populations tend to produce larger carp than lakes that don't.
Good observation. I can't find it now, but while reading the Michigan DNR site a while back they mentioned adding pike and muskie to lakes with high carp populations as their current strategy for trying to control the carp populations rather than using chemicals as in the past. That same article on the DNR page explained that once a carp reaches 5 pounds or more it has very few (if any) predators.

I think its a good idea to host Michigan Out of Doors. Hopefully they will do a story showing the benefits of "catch and release" as an alternative to "shoot and throw in the dumpster" like in this episode from May 22: http://youtu.be/irMlz1cSgvw?t=13m47s
(I was reading an article last night from the Minnesota DNR explaining that bow fishing has actually helped carp thrive even more in certain lakes.)

Dave,
Is it too late to get on the waiting list?
If it is, maybe I'll just fish Dunton Park one day and Saugatuck the other. I think I'd still be close enough to meet up for supper.
-
Anybody that didn't get in for the Wooden Shoe want to fish Saugatuck those same days?

I just made my reservation for Holiday Inn Express on Traxler Court for $124 per night. Last year we stayed at the Double Tree and loved it, but their prices are much higher this year. I guess they have a lot of weddings booked for the same weekend. I liked being close to downtown, but it was so windy and cold last year we didn't get to take advantage it.

Thanks

Ordered from Granny's. Resistance doesn't have the typical flavors I like to use.
-
I am getting ready to order some R & W carp juice and wondered if anyone has tried the following flavors and what their impressions were:
Peach
Red Grape
Grape Ape
Banana Nut
I have my favorites but thought I'd order some other flavors and try to expand my horizons a little.

It's a good problem to have. I am always happy when it happens but it's not always pretty. Lucky for me I fish with someone else 90% of the time so that helps a lot. Sometimes it has happened and it's always a scramble.
Here's an entertaining video of a double that Bill had and both were landed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FAfj3pCB_Wc
When I am by myself I net both fish in one net if I have to, but I now have two nets just for this reason. It happens in the fall of the year more often for me.

If I every buy another one I'm going to buy this one from Trakker: http://www.bigcarptackle.com/carp-care/nets/nets/trakker-42-eq-carbon-landing-nets

I used 14# Stren when I started. I caught about 20 carp on that line before switching to braid and I started catching more fish.
-
I have used ABF 50s and they work great.

Thanks for the tip on the TUF. I am going to order the TUF Line XP 1200 Yard in 50#. It's definitely more affordable than Power Pro or Suffix and has free shipping right now.

I love that link Dave. I think I'll try the two down town parks (one each day). I really appreciate it.

We use it on my wife's "test" rod. Sometimes she ends up catching bigger fish than I do because she always wants to go against the grain. She uses the stuff I typically don't like and catches fish; sometimes more fish than I do. She started the trend with pink pop up dumb bells that have worked pretty well when I don't use maize.

Thank you so much Dave. I will be giving some of these spots a try. I assume the downtown park is on Park Street.
Have you been following the ATC 2015 ?

After watching it the last couple of years, now I want to experience it up close.
