  1. Andy, Maybe when I was a little younger, but I'm not sure I can drive 21 hours straight. I have relatives along the way so hotel in route is not an issue. The more we've discussed it tonight I don't think it will be as expensive as I first thought. We would have to rent a vehicle though because I wouldn't trust our Explorer down there and back (175k miles on it).

  2. I have been penciling out some estimated costs for potentially making the trip to fish the ATC next year. I am guessing at least $2,000 for two of us to fly from Michigan to complete in the event including air fare, shipping equipment, food, lodging, etc. and roughly $1,000 to rent a vehicle and drive (I have free places to stay along the way).

Any ideas for making the trip on a bare bones budget?

  3. The northern states have predator fish better suited for weeding out the little ones, here in Indiana lakes that have good pike and Muskie populations tend to produce larger carp than lakes that don't.

Good observation. I can't find it now, but while reading the Michigan DNR site a while back they mentioned adding pike and muskie to lakes with high carp populations as their current strategy for trying to control the carp populations rather than using chemicals as in the past. That same article on the DNR page explained that once a carp reaches 5 pounds or more it has very few (if any) predators.

  4. I just made my reservation for Holiday Inn Express on Traxler Court for $124 per night. Last year we stayed at the Double Tree and loved it, but their prices are much higher this year. I guess they have a lot of weddings booked for the same weekend. I liked being close to downtown, but it was so windy and cold last year we didn't get to take advantage it.

  5. I am getting ready to order some R & W carp juice and wondered if anyone has tried the following flavors and what their impressions were:

    Peach

    Red Grape

    Grape Ape

    Banana Nut

I have my favorites but thought I'd order some other flavors and try to expand my horizons a little.

  6. It's a good problem to have. I am always happy when it happens but it's not always pretty. Lucky for me I fish with someone else 90% of the time so that helps a lot. Sometimes it has happened and it's always a scramble.

Here's an entertaining video of a double that Bill had and both were landed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FAfj3pCB_Wc

When I am by myself I net both fish in one net if I have to, but I now have two nets just for this reason. It happens in the fall of the year more often for me.

  7. We use it on my wife's "test" rod. Sometimes she ends up catching bigger fish than I do because she always wants to go against the grain. She uses the stuff I typically don't like and catches fish; sometimes more fish than I do. She started the trend with pink pop up dumb bells that have worked pretty well when I don't use maize.
