  1. First and foremost: THANK YOU, Frank Rink for putting this together. You sir were the 1st one to arrive and the last one to leave.

Had many opportunities to land fish. For every one I caught I probably lost four.

learned how to fish better with braid and the importance of having the right drag tension. Screaming runs that ended with no fish in the net. I caught on towards the end of the day and got fish in the net. (this is where I insert that credit goes out to Frank Rink for his advice and knowledge he shared freely.)

Things I did not see coming

had one hook straighten out. Fish on, Fish off

    (changed brand of hook)

After that I had one hook break. Fish on, Fish off

had one quick link straighten out as well. Fish on Fish off

At the end of the day I left a better fisherman than when I started.

    Next time!

  2. "This event can be a lot of work and anyone that puts their hands up to offer to host has to commit a lot of time and effort into it. So kudos to those that have or intend to put their hands up."

My hand is up to help out Bill if this gets the Green Light.

  3. I drive a black jeep, do stop by. It would be a pleasure to meet you

Was fishing at night during the summer and caught Two Gar on creek chubs while fishing for Catfish. Both were around three foot or better.

Yes that area is very silty and after high water a lot of branches and trees end up in this shallow area. However there is a narrow stretch of grass about 70-100 yards out where the Carp spawn every spring since I can remember.

Next to this shallow area to the west is one of the deeper holes on the Rock River. Again a person has to cast out a ways to keep from getting snagged. Not because of trees and branches here, but from the scrap yard. Thats where all kinds of scrap metal has fallen into the river, been pilling up for years. What a mess it is down there.

A couple other easy to fish spots are north side by the dam and near the boat dock at Page Park. Either side. The west side is around 15 feet deep, the east side is shallow.

I have had real good luck at Page Park when the water is up. Going to try a zig rig there. The Dam can get crowded.

  4. (CCA) They sure do have some big fish by the dam. That is where I've witnessed several large Flathead's caught as well as carp over the years

. I wish I had been using a scale back then to weight carp just so I could say for sure how much they weighed.

Back then I didn't care about how much they weighed and I guess for the most part it holds true for me now. Weight is only somewhat important to me during events where cash and prizes are awarded.

My awards and prizes are getting a run, landing them, and figuring out the right bait to use. But not limited to just those things.

The only monster carp I ever had on got off due to a couple of things. Not having a net big enough to land it, and not being able to turn it.

That was the biggest carp I ever had on and I can say with confidence that I have caught several 20's in my life. This one was well over 20. And for me that is huge. lol

I was fishing just above the dam on the south side on the catwalk of the powerhouse with the grandson of the man running the powerhouse.

The young man won the Dixon Fishing Derby that day. 15 minutes after I netted what was the winner of the Derby I hooked on to a carp that made his look like a pop can. (23 Pounds) That Carp surfaced several times and each time the youngster attempted to net it.with no luck. In the end that carp took to running and never stopped til my line gave way due to rubbing on the cement wall underneath the catwalk.

I have lived and fished this river most my life, never going anywhere else. My New Years Resolution is to GO and fish other venues and meet other CAG members. and of course catch some Carp.

  5. Set up just in front of deep water. That is where the 12 footer come in handy. I can cast right on the edge. Fished around this spot since the 70's. takes a good ten seconds for the lead to hit the bottom in the deepest part. A local, (Ducky) took his underwater camera a few years back when the river was frozen over to see if any fish were there. Looked like Time Square on New Years Eve. Lots of fish. Manly catfish.

The biggest Flathead I have seen myself caught in Dixon was 63 pounds. they get big.

  6. I met him on the river awhile back when I was while running traps.

He told me that he is the only one to get a permit to trap in our area. He gave me some home made deer sausage. Man it was good.

I think for the same reason I never ran into other trappers is that the distance is kind of short between dams, making it not worth the effort for profit.

I never seen any fish in his boat when he pulled up the ramp. But to be sure there are some big ones in the rock river. The thing most damaging was the fish kill a few year back due to a spillage around the Rockford, Illinois area. YouTube has several videos with thousands of fish belly up, and I have not seen the big Carp since.

It s not uncommon to catch 30/40 or more carp in a matter of a couple of hours fishing on the north side of the dam in Dixon once the swim starts in the spring/summer. Heck, even guys all the way Aurora come fish it on a regular bases. :)

  7. I think the Carp are happy with the warm weather. I caught a glimpse of a few rolling on the surface. I sight rarley observed for me this time of year.

A few pics from today as I got out a couple hours.

I also would like to mention that the Pips, baskets, hooks, leads, beads, fake corn, and pop-ups used to catch Carp today all were free. They were part of the grab bag so to speak at the end of the last Tourney in Joliet. I blanked every single time this year at Joliet, however I'm catching fish right now and will continue to catch fish for some time with the the items mentioned above.

Thanks to the guys that donated and made it possible for me to catch Carp today.

  8. If someone says they don't know Matt Catmatt Jones they never spent a day on the water. lol He has a regular column in the local paper. I have a friend that fishes with him as well. Cabela's King Kat has been held for several years in Dixon, have you fished it? June 5th and 6th 2015.

Here is a link in case you are interested in the results..
