  1. I have been trying an oatmeal pack bait for both chum and as PVA filler. I usually throw a little bit of pineapple flavor in it and this past time I used a few drops of clove essential oil that my wife was trying to get rid of. Had good luck this past weekend, will try again this weekend Lord permitting.

  2. LOL, that's the video I watched so I have no excuse. That is the weirdest motion to get used to. I keep wanting to throw with my right shoulder, what I am guessing is meant by boxing.

The reality is, its my casting style, heavy weights (I used to fish the Potomac with my Dad as a kid where we needed heavy weight to stay put and the habit stuck) and the huge PVA bags or pack bait that I use.

Focusing on what I can BUY to fix a problem is my knee jerk reaction to everything. Still striving for the wisdom to try the non-$$$ approaches first.

Thanks for the great advice y'all.

  3. Guilty, Guilty and Guilty. I think when I try to cast further, I tend to box forward with my right hand instead of pulling with my left. Need more practice, thus need more fishing!! Also learning to use that drag a lot and let the fish wear itself out rather than fight it in so hard. My son just wants to bull them in, all force no brain. 13 years old, did I mention?

  4. Yup, I break down to pack up my rods. I was all set to go braid but the thought of losing a fish when it makes that last shake and the braid doesn't give worries me. This is all about getting my 13yr old onto some big fish, he loses a big one at the bank and I'll be folding him up for the day.

  5. Can you explain that? I see much more experienced carpers on here using much lighter line than I am, apparently without issue. My breaks come when I really try and cast far out. With a 12' rod, I am generating too much tip speed I imagine and snapping the line.

  6. My dad and I used to fish the Potomac and this is more what I remember carp looking like as a kid. Are they leaner and stronger looking like that as a rule in rivers? Most of the lake ones look more like defensive tackles, big and, uh, heavy.....

  7. Ok, throwing myself on the mercy of the mob here. Another six hour session at Lake Fork Saturday morning and nothing but catfish. In past trips we have at least pulled a few 5-6 lb common carp, no love this time. Here is what I tried:

    1. Baited with deer corn that had been soaked, boiled and used vanilla & strawberry extract.

---Seen from some videos that I would be better off using concentrate, like CC Moores stuff?

---Not a big fan of the SPOD, kept spilling corn in flight or bringing it back with corn still in it. Think I like the concept of a spomb better.

    2. Using pre-tied hair rigs that I bought online. The hair is shorter than I used to tie them - barely have room for a small boilie and popup. When both are on it, almost the entire hair is filled up and the bait doesn't hang, it kinda sticks off to the side, should I be using longer hairs for this rig? I want to fish a boilie with a pop up on top to get it off the bottom.

    3. When it wasn't raining, I was using PVA bags with method mix in it (various types that I have bought online) and crushed up boilies. I would put the hook and my weight in the bag and seal it, cast out, etc. I was wading out to cast and according to my hummingbird, I was in 15-17 ft of water.

    4. Weight is 3-5oz inline weight that slides on the line - stops of course at the swivel where I tie my hair rig on. I haven't figured out the more complex rigs so a couple of times when I wasn't using PVA bags, the hook might have tangled around the weight. I use the PVA to reduce the chance of a tangle as well as drop some free food.

We had a couple of big runs on the rod where I have a baitrunner reel but when my son set the hook, it missed. Kinda curious, with this type of set up and hair rigs, is a big hook set just pulling the hook out? Should we just be clicking off the bait runner and holding the rod steady or do we need a big 'set the hook' pull?

We got about 5-6 catfish, a couple of them upwards of two pounds but no carp or buffalo. I am fishing at the west 515 bridge where I am pretty sure some monsters were caught in the tournament. Do I just need a shot of patience or am I really doing something wrong here?

  8. Hi Folks:

My son and I are getting back into carp with a vengeance this year after moving out to Winnsboro, TX. We are about 30 min from Lake Fork so we have been hitting that lake up pretty regularly.

My dad is from Hungary so I grew up thinking carp was a trophy fish. He used to take me fishing on the Potomac and a few other places around the Washington, DC area when I was growing up. He was really into eating carp at one point and even wrote up a recipe book on how to prepare (brine, smoke, etc) carp but I have always been catch and release.

When I moved to Texas ten years ago or so, I did some fishing around GV and met up with a lot of rabid carpers that turned me on to the Euro-style but I never really went too deep into it.

I am the strategic end of the team and my goal is to be able to watch my 13yr old son catch fish (he lands everything) so I am learning as much as I can right now. If anyone is ever heading out to Fork on a Saturday, let us know because we sure would like to learn how get on the big fish there. So far its been 5-6lb commons and no Buffalo but we are starting to change up tactics so hopefully bigger ones are coming.

We have fished Lake Winnsboro (small carp), Cypress Springs & Bob Sandlin (frustration and catfish) and recently have been hitting Lake Fork pretty regular (5-6lb carp).
