  1. I took the wife carp fishing once and she has vowed never to join me again :-). She will never understand the joy of watching the water :-)

It's about an hour and half drive for me, but I want to get the lines wet early. I would be totally fine with a 6am meet up.

I would prefer beef/chicken to pork, but feel free to do whatever. I'm totally open to bringing in some food as well, so don't feel like you have to provide everything.

Let's do a quick headcount and make sure we know exactly who is showing up. Might be easier to have a PM going amongst those who will join in.

    Looking forward to the 8th!

  2. Hey Lewis, feel free to PM me any time. I totally missed your last post :-(

I'm in the north Brooklyn Park area. I pretty much fish the rivers around here. I know of a couple of people in the area. Would be fun to try some of the local lakes as well. Just PM me and we can go from there. Thanks!

  3. lewiscarp,carpyer,

I met and fish with chacya at anoke a few times.. long plans do not work for me well.. I decide on friday for weekend fishing. I am thinking to go out this saturday .. think chaya may be interested .. you are very welcome to join ...

for spots I like coon rapid but last 4 outings been in anoka/champlin two rivers park ... u guys have a place in mind ?

My inlaws are in town this weekend, so I'll be busy. Not happy, but busy :-)

I am thinking of fishing on Friday morning around 5 am . I mainly work from home and can be out till about 8 am. Will probably hit Anoka.

Next week, I can fish any day after 4pm. Looking forward to fishing with more guys. I'm also interested in finding more decent spots on rivers, which can accomodate 4-5 anglers. Most of my are pretty good but the areas without tree cover (for casting out), are limited...

  4. Had yesterday afternoon off, and was in for an interesting session. I hit the river about 5:15pm. It was about 84 degrees and windy, a day after a substantial storm. I decided to fish tight, so only took out m 7 foot catfish rod with 20lb mono.

First hour, not a nibble. I tried strawberry boilies topped off with tutti frutti fake corn, and then switched to home made boilies topped off with sweet corn. At this point, I decided to change things up a little bit, and decided on use sweet corn on a hair rig and top it off with a fake corn. I was also used home made strawberry pack bait on the method feeder.

Run 1: Hour and half into the fishing session, got my first run. I set the hook and saw a carp explode on the surface, pretty much airborne. Next thing I know, it spat the hair rig out.

Run 2: Big run. Big fish. I had to muscle the fish so that it didn't disappear behind a point. About 20 feet from shore, the line went limp. The 30lb braided leader was cut in half. In reality, it must have hit a rock-but I would like to think that a muskie was to blame...

Run 3: Big run again. Took my time easing this fish in. Big girl! Didn't weigh/measure her, but she was wider than my unhooking mat so I would think in the 15lb range. She was skinny and beat up and scarred from breeding, so released her quickly.

Run 4: Massive run. Set the hook and started easing the fish towards shore and then...the line goes limp. Braided leader cut off again! I've fished this spot before and never noticed a sharp rock close to the shore, which would cut off the leader. At this point, I began to wonder if these carp were carrying little scissors, to plan their escape...

Run 5: I cast off into a shallow channel with a piece of corn on a hook. No method feeder, no weight. It was probably 12 feet from shore. Before I knew it, the bite alarm was screaming for mercy. Pulled in this hog but there was a snag right next to shore. Took this picture when I was in knee deep water and unhooked the fish without having to bring her to to shore. She was a good 10-15lb fish.

All the runs took place within an hour and half, and I was in the mood to catch some big ones -even if it mean losing some tackle. But..had to go home instead to let the dogs out.

  5. Catfishermen are worse than secretive teenagers when it comes to giving up their their spots. I used to do a lot of catfishing and still throw out chunk of cut bait from time time. I mainly fish the Mississippie. Best shore spots are downstream from dams and spillways. Best bait for me has always been strips of cut bait or live bullheads (under 8 inches allowed in MN).

Here is a really good catfish thread (http://hotspotoutdoors.com/forums/forum/57-catfish/). There is a TON of information on this thread. The site also has fishing reports and people offering up open seats on their boats for catfishing.

Catfishing is a different kind of thrill. You sit at dusk or in the dark and wait for a big thump on your line. Then every 2 mins, you feel like you are dragging a log, before it pulls in a little more line.

Once the water levels go down a bit more, I will probably start hitting the mississippi for some cats. This year, I only have 2-3 under my belt.

  6. This was actually the first time I ever gut hooked a fish using a hair rig. Somehow this big girl engulfed the entire hair rig and it got caught way back in the throat. Must have been a freak incident since I've never gut hooked a carp using hair or any other rigs.

I had to cut the line for this one. It must have been really hungry..or maybe I should have used a larger hook on the hair rig...

  7. Yesterday, I had a 12lb carp completely swallow a circle hook. I was fishing in strong current for red horse suckers and didn't expect to have a carp on the line (using 8lb test). I have never had a carp swallow a hook, let alone a circle hook.

So, what would you do if this happened?

  8. Just joined the site last week. I'm in the north west suburbs of Minneapolis (Champlin/Brooklyn Park area). Have been carping for year years and am loving it. While most guys are trying to catch walleyes in this state, I prefer my canvas chair and a good book, while waiting for my reels to start screaming.

Am always up for meeting new carp fishermen/women. I normally fish the Mississippi (north suburbs, saint paul etc). Near really had good luck fishing the lakes for carp.

I also enjoy fishing for large catfish, bowfin, northern's etc. Pretty much anything that put's up a good fight.

Fish like me because they get to go back home and watch tv after I release them..... :titanic:
