  1. So a buddy of mine has never caught a fish over 4lbs so I convinced him to come carping with me on the Mississippi. He didn't see a point to handling a 12 foot pole or a hair rig so I gave him a flavored puff to put on his jig head. What happened next was one for the books.

He forgot to keep the reel open on his 5 foot rod after casting out 20 feet from shore. Out of the blue I heard him scream..his rod was shooting down the river. He couldn't believe that a fish was strong enough to do that..but I think I got him hooked :-)

Earlier on this afternoon, I hooked into a 10lb fish. A little kid was fishing with his grandpa and was intrigued by the carp rod, so I let him play the fish. He actually got to land the fish (with me holding on to the rod of course, after already seeing a rod go missing today). It's always nice to get kids into carping..

  2. I don't know what all this fuss is about.

    Since:

    1. I have never fished a carp tournament before

    2. I have never fished a designated peg

    3. I am awesome

The probability of me winning this tournament is a 80%. If Jaffar fishes the tourny with me as a 2 man team, that goes up to 85%

How do I know all this? I bought a crystal ball (made in China) from Ebay. These things don't lie!!! :-)

about the bet - I gotta check with aniq .. we plan to fish team...

with Due respect to "Magnificent 7" .. I think this year you may see atleast 1 new unfamiliar face making top 3

  3. Ctdaniels was a fantastic host. Along with allowing us to use his dock/lawn, he had his girlfriend even prepared a great dinner! Overall we picked up close to 40 fish between the 5 of us. The largest was a picked up by Syed Jaffer. Am sure he will put up some pics :-)

  4. Last weekend I had non stop action in the river (carp and cats).

Last night I fished a small lake for 4-5 hours . Carp could be seen everywhere. I always fish rivers and have never actually caught a lake carp intentionally.

I knew my chum was working since I could see carp activity in my targeted spots. I tried everything, not nothing worked. Sometime small was chewing up my boilies (small turtles?) so I switched to flavored puffs and sweet corn. I finally foul hooked a 1lb carp. Other than that, no action. I knew they were feeding heavily on my small area of chum and the bite alarm beeped constantly with minor bumps. I switched to a shorter hair rig and smaller bait presentation, thinking it might get a smaller carp to pick up the bait but ..nothing.

What's working for you guys. It's in the mid 80's out here and carp are surfacing all over but not taking bait. Are any specific flavors working? Is a heavier scent or lighter scent working for these fish?

Am always up for learning more about lake carp...

  5. Spent a few hours at the river this morning. Was a beautiful morning, misty and cool. Fished 7-11 am before I had to head out.

Thought I would spend the day experimenting with different home made and commercial baits. I've spent a lot of time reading about pay lake and euro style rigs and have been slowly learning to modify those to suit my own style of fishing. Let's just say I am starting to use bits and pieces from both styles. I like keeping things simple and doing whatever works on that day.

First cast: 4-5 lb channel cat. Released unharmed though it jumped off the unhooking mat.IMG_20150808_0754209761.jpg

Half an hour into the session, I hooked a 5-6lb carp and unhooked it without having to land it.

Then things slowed down for the next hour or so. I switched things up a few times and finally found a combination that seemed to work.

Hooked into a 9.8lb carp which was bright yellow. It had started to rain and I didn't want to bother taking my phone out of the tackle bag. But here's the weird part. This fish which was less than 10lbs, twisted my hook sideways, almost into a circle. I won't go into the hook size or the seller (purchased from a well known vendor). I was just amused, since the fish stayed on line even with the bent hook.

Next few hours saw 4 carp landed. I've never had so many nibbles and mini runs before. I suspect they were channel catfish poking around the bait. I used a very large presentation to prevent small fish from picking up the bait. Overall, the next 4 fish were between 8-12 lbs so no monsters today.

So 4 hours. 6 fish. Only complain was that I seemed to have set up shop near a hornet nest and had to take care of a few of the buggers.

And now, here's a pic of my 10 inch Lionhead golfish who helps me decide which flavors fish will like. He's about 7 years old now

(no, I don't use hooks while testing on him!!)

  6. Just remember, bystanders will laugh at you if you ever tell them the effort you put into your rigs/pack bait/bait etc. So just nod and smile if they ask what you are using. It will drive them nuts and they will walk away confused :-)

  7. I'm in Minnesota and had a very similar mindset about hair rigs, until I started catching a lot of fish with them. In my opinion, it's not just about the fishing pressure. Carp are vary fish, and the hair rig allows them to suck up the bait without getting spooked easily. I would give hair rigs a try.

As for corn, I often use sweet corn on a hair rig. To make it more robust, I normally add a piece of flavored maize to the end of the rig as well. This has greatly reduced the chances of corn falling off a hair rig during long casts.

You might also use some sort of method feeder (even if it's the in line spring ones). This will keep the carp feeding around your hook for a longer time, thus increasing the chance of them picking up your bait.

To catch larger fish, you might also try out boilies or larger hook baits. This is a much debated topic, but just try out new things and see what works.

I'm a new member and am a novice when it comes to carp fishing. What I've expressed above are "simply" my thoughts/learnings through trial and error. I'm no expert at carping but am always up for trying new things and learning from my mistakes :-)

    Tight lines!
