  1. Jerome, from a thread in the "carp locally" section detailing Michigan events for the coming year, these dates are listed:

May: 2nd annual Holland Carp Classic. 2 day competitive event. May 17th & 18th.

I'm not a competitive angler, but If I'm not up at our camp that weekend, I'll almost certainly make the drive over to Holland at least one day and just hang out, maybe act as "hired gun" net boy:D

  2. paul the one that worked for gm?

Yep Dru, that is me! Still work there (G.R. store). Just not been doing as much fishing lately, way more hunting!

  3. I grew up north of Big Rapids, worked for the local parks, and know that place well;) Kev, Sarah and I fished there several years ago, but our results were nothing like that(I think Kev. took big fish with one around 19lbs, and I was just behind him). I've caught fish into the mid to upper 30's at Newaygo St. Park, and a few really big ones below Croton when steelhead fishing(on spawn sacks), but due to having to pay to camp, never put alot of time in at the park there. LOVE the venue though, and always thought it would make a wonderful fishin location! Glad to see new folks carrying on there!

  4. I've not been here in I'd guess, a year? Dunno...just moved on to other things, non-carpy. Then in July last year, my old computer died and in the process of slowly getting links back, I just never got around to this one. A couple of you of course, I keep up on facebook, but mainly I've been doing the trout/salmon/steelhead thing when I fish at all, hunting, and of course, "Finding Bigfoot"... ;) Anyway, was thinking the last few days I needed to drop back on and catch up, maybe i"ll even break out the rods this summer, we'll see. I'm guessing the winter get-together is already past(if it happened at all, never saw anything noted about it on anyone's FB)...

Edited to add...wow, even my picture is gone! I'll have to get something up other then a formless silhouette:D

  5. More to it than that Paul.

Once these are complete i'll announce the new sections, their intent, and how other interested states can get one too.

Thanks Andy. If it's a matter of man-hours, let me know., as I'd be willing to help add them if it's a matter of time or admin function familiarity(I have both:)) )

  6. Thats fine Louis, but why limit what states have sub-forums? CA, WI, and MI jump to mind as states as active as those listed, and I'd suspect I missed a few! It only takes a few seconds to add or edit a forum on here(I admin boards that run the same software). Curious is all.

  7. Just wondered why only a handful of states listed for the public view here. I can't imagine it was based on carping popularity or member input, as our Michigan group is very robust and active?

Also...given that Michigan(and I'd guess others) have their own forums...how about a pinned link at the top for those sites? That way, if a states does not have a specific forum here, but has a stand alone club or site, it both provides the same service as a forum here and possibly fosters greater interaction between those individual sites/clubs and the CAG. Just a thought;)

    (edited for clarity and speeeeeeling).

  8. well i read a post in my country's forum about carp fishing in Bulgaria. two anglers went out on saturday and after a 40 min fight it appeared to be a 128 pound 58kgs black amur - grass carp... i was wondering is that a world record ? the guy said it broke the scale hook and ripped up the sling.... the fish was a monster... it was released after pictures were taken.... i will post some pics later on since im not home now.... or here is the link to the post sorry its on bulgarian you wont be able to read it...

Wow, biiig fish! If any of you guys have google chrome as a browser, just right click anyplace on that site and chose "translate". Chrome has a cool star trek like universal translator:D

  9. Not a dumb question! :D It's called curiosity!

Nothing really happened to it. We just didn't spend enough time at home watching the tube to make paying for cable woth it, and, without cable, TV's just not worth watching anymore anyway. Worse, the channels Dad and I really wanted, with the sole exception of Public TV, were uber-pricey anyway. We just decided books, the record player (Seriously!), and the DVD/VHS player were, realistically, enough for our entertainment needs. I miss Star Trek reruns, River Monsters, and cage fights, though. :) And, yes, I accomplish a bit more on average without TV. :P

Anna, I have a tv, a nice big screen LCD HD version, and still have not turned it on in I bet almost a year! I don't have cable, but fwiw, everything you just mentioned can easily be found on places such as youtube...so don't despair, just look for those shows you enjoy and watch em on the puter'.

  10. Part of the second video shows a snakehead taking apart a LM bass. Oh boy that must get the bass guys going.

Yeah, although that video was a bit misleading. It was in an aquarium, and more then likely the much smaller bass(looked about 1/3 the size of the snakehead) was tossed into a tank in which the snakehead was resident. I've kept fish for years, and once a fish, particularly an aggressive species such as a snakehead is settled into a tank, any fish introduced particularly in a situation such as that where it's a bare tank with no hiding place, and the new fish has no idea what's going on, and the original fish is conditioned to be looking at anything dropped in as food..well..you can see what I mean.

Reverse the situation, take a 10" snakehead and toss it blind into a tank with a 20" smallmouth that is settled..and the snakehead lasts 5 seconds.

That said, I'm quite aware that snakeheads are very aggressive in nature, much more so then bass. A much more interesting "fight" might be if they run into a big male bowfin bent on protecting it's brood....might well turn out a bit different for the snakehead!

  11. fitzz,

Stupid fish - and I can't even catch one.

The video is a perfect example of what we "DON'T" want to have happen. Carp that achieve 12 - 15 lbs in encapsolulated shoals have little competition. They lay the most eggs. A far better "signature" for sport carp fishing would be a greater variance in size and more bio diversity. I think saw one salmon (maybe trout?). "Specimen" carp will not come from such a "carp friendly" environment. Certainly, I'd think a LOT of carp will (could) come from this venue but "0" biggies.

This has nothing to do with the wonderful pictures in the video. The guy did a fantastic job.

    Phone

Phone, that video was shot in Lake Michigan, the carp tend to school in certain areas, often seemingly by size. That video was FULL of Lake trout, they outnumbered the carp in the video by a factor of at least 3-4 to 1, and I noticed a few small fish as well..so not sure where you got the idea that there was "one" other fish in the entire video?.

Trust me...Lake Michigan does happen to kick out the occasional big fish;)

  12. Bill -- with the cutthroat tactics being displayed by many -- just to make a crust of bread during the recession, I wouldn't even want to guess where the poor fish went. The only conclusive fact here is -- that water is a damn sight poorer for the robbing of good sized fish.

Unless we can stop crap like this -- we all know what the end result will be -- destitution for Carpers.

Brid, while I fully understand the frustration with having a defacto commercial operation show up at a persons favorite location...we also all know that the statement implying that said commercial operations(or in this case defacto, the term being used simply to describe an end result), will result in "destitution for carpers" unless stopped...is really very untrue.

Commercial operations for carp have been here for as long as carp have, and they do not , and will not, have any real long term effect on the populations.

Don't worry..the carp will still be there in the hundreds of millions if not billions.
