    How do I register?

Hi, Brenden--I noticed you got to the right thread for registration, but you are not listed as a CAG Member.  You are listed as a Forum Guest.  The FFF is reserved for CAG members.  I hope you join when you can.  Thanks.--Frank

CAG's First Fishing Folly (FFF) 2020

CAG’s First Fishing Folly is back for a 17th year!  FFF is an enjoyable, challenging, world-wide, CAG event held on Wednesday, January 1, 2020, during which registered anglers can fish anytime from 12:00 midnight to 11:59 p.m.  They enter their photographed catches in any number of FFF contest categories (first carp of the year, total number of carp captured, big fish, small fish, big mirror, etc.). Participation takes some strong will-power, a willingness to face the elements, a touch of goofiness, and maybe just a tad of craziness to go fishing for carp at all hours of the day and night on January 1, 2020!

Registration will begin on Sunday, December 1, 2018.

Thanks to CAG President Iain Sorrell and the CAG BoD for giving me the opportunity to coordinate the event for a seventh straight year.  There is no entry fee for participants!  You must simply be a CAG member in good standing to participate.

I will summarize below a few reminders for FFF 2020. I encourage you to sign up on the 2020 FFF Registration thread, and I look forward to your participation. Have fun. —Dr. Frank Rink, FFF 2020 Coordinator

Here are some 2020 FFF guidelines that apply to you:

    1.  No need for a fishing partner (although it is encouraged).  It’s tough enough convincing our significant others to allow us to fish on New Year’s Day, and it can be even tougher finding a fishing partner to serve as a witness, especially for the wee hours of January 1. Even though partnerships and group angling are encouraged, individual anglers will be allowed to participate in FFF 2020 and submit catches and related information without a witness. The honor system will be in place relative to your submitting accurate weights and times. Keep in mind, though, that you are still required to submit a picture of you holding your catch (your face must be showing) for every fish/entry you submit. You better be good at taking “selfies” or at using a camera with a timer. Just be safe out there if you are alone!

    2.  This year's contest will be for "bragging rights," recognition on CAG sites and publications, and worldwide and state-wide certificates of achievement.  Participation in CAG's First Fishing Folly (FFF) has always been free to CAG members.  We are going to give our generous prize donors and the CAG coffers a break this year, meaning that there will be no monetary or bait/tackle prizes.  Having organized this activity for seven years now, I've always noticed that this isn't about a few bucks or a few boilies anyway.  It's about pride, carp angling, and doing something a little different on New Years Day!

That being said, the contest will be expanded in 2020.  In addition to a worldwide competition for Top 10 status in a variety of categories (First Fish, Big Fish, Most Fish, Total Weight, Small Fish, Big Mirror, Sunrise Photo, and Jerome Adventure Tale), we will have the same categories on a state by state basis.  Recognition and certificates will be awarded to the top three anglers in each category from state to state.  This is based on the state in which you make your catches.  And, yes, if you have the opportunity, you may fish in more than one state and submit entries.

    3.  All sunrise photos earn the photographer a Sunrise certificate.  All who submit a sunrise photo will receive a certificate touting their work. Getting out of bed and taking a sunrise photo on January 1, 2020 is no small feat in itself and deserves some recognition.  The primary intention of this category is to share some fabulous January 1 photos with fellow CAG anglers. In fact, if it’s too foggy, cloudy, snowy, or rainy, you can still take a picture at the approximate time of sunrise. A separate thread will be created to submit and share sunrise photos.

    4.  The contest will be completely transparent.  All registrations, contest entry submissions, and award announcements will be made within threads created on this FFF 2020 main forum. That means that you should know how to post a photo on the forum. In the case of extreme difficulty, I will take your photo via e-mail and post the photo for you. I will crunch the weight data, post results, and announce prizes within a week of the submission deadline. I realize that the announcement of winners will not be a big surprise, but I like the open, transparent aspect of posting all photos and data on a thread accessible to all. It also gives you a chance to check my skills of adding pounds and ounces and to make sure I haven't overlooked anyone.

    5.  The contest will be completely free.  There is no fee to participate, but, as noted, you must be a CAG member to register for and participate in FFF 2020!  What are you waiting for?  Registration begins on December 1, 2019!

    6.  Registration deadline.  You must register by 11:59 p.m. (your local time) on Tuesday, December 31, 2019. Registering much earlier than that is always appreciated. A registration thread will be created on Sunday, December 1, 2019.  Thanks.—Frank

    Specific Rules for FFF 2020

    1. Go through a tough negotiation with your significant other, and, hopefully, get “permission” to fish on January 1, 2020. To count, a carp must be hooked and landed on Wednesday, January 1, 2020 between midnight and 11:59:59 p.m.

    2.  Although partnerships are encouraged for this FFF 2020 adventure, individuals are allowed to fish on their own throughout the duration of the contest. No witness is needed for your catches. We trust your honesty in recording and reporting your catches, times, and weights. We are CAG!

    3. Please follow property access restrictions and local laws. You may use as many rods as locally allowed, and you may pre-bait as much as your DNR deems acceptable. Please catch carp with a single hook. Exhibit proper carp care with appropriate nets, weighing mats, and slings. Practice CPR--catch, photograph, and release.

    4.  All carp must be both hooked and landed on January 1, 2020.  It's fine to cast a rod and start fishing on December 31, but make sure any fish you submit are hooked after the stroke of midnight on January 1, 2020.   We are counting on your honesty and sense of fair-play.   The time a fish is hooked must be after midnight.  A carp will not count if it is hooked at 11:59 p.m. on 12/31/19 and landed at 12:01 a.m. on 1/1/20.

As indicated in rule #5 below, the
exact landing time of a fish is the time it is safely secured in your net. That is the time you submit on your entry post.

    5. (THIS IS A RELATIVELY RECENT RULE CHANGE)
    a. For contest purposes, you must record and submit the landing time and weight of all your captures.
    b. The exact landing time of a fish is the time it is safely secured in your net.
    c. For contest purposes, a photo of you holding the fish or of you with the fish on the mat must be taken and submitted for all your captures.  Your face must be in the photo.  Your camera's date and time stamp on the photo would be nice, but it is not required.  We trust your honor.
    d. When you post the photos on the designated FFF 2020 forum thread, caption it with your name, the weight of the carp in pounds and ounces, the state in which you captured the fish, and the time of capture.  Don't forget to tare your weigh-sling. If you are fishing solo, the same photo and recording requirements apply, so you better be good at taking “selfies” while holding a carp or at handling a camera with a timer.

    6. Only carp designated as Cyprinus Carpio (common and mirror carp) count. Other varieties (Crucian, buffalo, grass, silver, etc.) do not count.

    7. Even though non-members are welcome to accompany CAG members and fish with them during FFF 2020, the actual contest, certificates, and public posting of winners are reserved for CAG members only. CAG members must register for FFF 2020 by 11:59 p.m (your local time) on December 31, 2019 to be eligible for awards and acknowledgments.

Now the fine print. Your participation in CAG’s First Fishing Folly 2020 automatically binds you to the following waiver of liability:

    1. In consideration for receiving permission to participate in the Carp Anglers Group First Fishing Folly on January 1, 2020, I hereby release, waive, discharge and covenant not to sue the organizers of the event, their officers, families, servants, agents and employees (hereinafter referred to as "releasees") from any and all liability, claims, demands, actions and causes of action whatsoever arising out of or relating to any loss, damage or injury, including death, that may be sustained by me, or to any property belonging to me or another, whether caused by the negligence of the releasees, or otherwise, while participating in the Carp Anglers Group First Fishing Folly on January 1, 2020, or while in, on or upon the premises where the Carp Anglers Group First Fishing Folly on January 1, 2020 is being conducted, while in transit to or from the premises, or in any place or places connected with the Carp Anglers Group First Fishing Folly on January 1, 2020.

    2. I am fully aware of risks and hazards connected with being on the premises and participating in the Carp Anglers Group First Fishing Folly on January 1, 2020, and I am fully aware that there may be risks and hazards unknown to me connected with being on the premises and participating in the Carp Anglers Group First Fishing Folly on January 1, 2020, and I hereby elect to voluntarily participate in the Carp Anglers Group First Fishing Folly on January 1, 2020, to enter upon the above named premises and engage in activities knowing that conditions may be hazardous, or may become hazardous or dangerous to me and my property. I voluntarily assume full responsibility for any risks of loss, property damage or personal injury, including death, that may be sustained by me, or any loss or damage to property owned by me or another, as a result of my being a participant in the Carp Anglers Group First Fishing Folly on January 1, 2020, whether caused by the negligence of releasees or otherwise.

    3. I further hereby agree to indemnify and save and hold harmless the releasees and each of them, from any loss, liability, damage or costs they may incur due to my participation in the Carp Anglers Group First Fishing Folly on January 1, 2020, whether caused by the negligence of any or all of the releasees, or otherwise.

    4. It is my express intent that this Release shall bind the members of my family and spouse, if I am alive, and my heirs, assigns and personal representative, if I am deceased, and shall be deemed as a Release, Waiver, Discharge and Covenant Not to Sue the above named releasees.

Don't forget to register for FFF 2020 by 11:59 p.m. (your local time) on Tuesday, December 31, 2019.  Registering much earlier than that is always appreciated.  Registration opens on Sunday, December 1, 2019.  Thanks and get out there! —Dr. Frank Rink, FFF 2020 Coordinator

  5. Huge congrats to a most deserving Wayne Boone for catching a carp in nearly impossible conditions at Joliet and winning the major awards at the 2019 CCC. Congrats, also, to Destinie, Aniq, and Fred for your section wins!

Big thanks to Chad Bettisch and Crew for a well-organized, enjoyable event, to Larry Seeman for his generous donations of porta-potty services and the coin bottle that generated some additional funds for CAG, to Larry's sister for catering the event, to Jeff Conroy for his donation of art for the winning angler, to all who sponsored and graciously added to the raffle tables, and to the 40+ anglers who participated in CCC 2019.

Despite the tough conditions, it was a pleasure to be among those in attendance. --Frank Rink

    Hello everyone, this Larry.

I going to try to raise some cash for CAG. I have a Snapple bottle filled with change. Each paid angler for the CCC will get one free guess as to how much money is in the bottle. Each additional guess will cost you $1, buy as many as you would like. The angler with the guess closest to the amount in the bottle without going over wins the $$. ALL money collected from this will be donated to Cag. The change in the bottle is donated by me. HINT: change in the bottle greater than $50 and less than $100. Feeling lucky?
