  1. Terrible, terrible news. How did it happen?

Heart attack is what I heard. Kurt had a lot going on in his life and speaking to Rob Hughes he even mentioned it was probably stress related.

I'm still in shock over the situation.

When we went over in '02 to Romania to fish Saralesti. Kurt spent a great deal of time giving me info to pass on to the rest of Team USA. He even told Tim & Al if he could have picked a peg it would have been the one they drew, they finished 5th. He shared info on how to fish pegs we had drawn. As things worked out Kurt still won the event out of 120 pairs.

I've gone over to Kurt's carp expo show in Austria a couple of times and he always went out of his way to make sure I was taken care of and had a enjoyable trip.

A class act that will be missed by many.

  2. Starting in January -

    ICFA-USA information

(This will be changinging - it's a temp site for early release and beta testing)

So any of you fishing the FFF want to make some 2011 entries. B) We will keep records both annually and perpetually for commons, mirrors and koi.

This is a stand alone from the CAG records. We still encourage everyone to enter those. We offer CAG members a $5 discount for their records in support of CAG.

More info will follow on ICFA membership, etc. after the first of the year.

Wishing Happy Holidays and a great 2011 to everyone from CTS.

  3. About two weeks ago I received a strange call that definitely fell in the "Too good to be true" category.

I was asked about the possibility of driving to Austin, TX(8 hours) and walking a complete novice through the paces on "How to catch a trophy carp"

I had less than 72 hours to take a non-fisherperson (Hooters Calendar Girl named Amber) from not only catching carp, to catching a 30lbs + carp.

We'd start fishing Saturday morning only fish daylight hours for filming purposes. I was up for the challenge. I don't fish Lady Bird(It's always going to be Town Lake to me) as often as I once did, but with my expenses covered and a chance at a bonus if we get some 20's and mega bonus ($1,000) if we(played and landed by Amber) get a 30+ on the bank.

I showed up a day early to look around although I was about 90% sure where we were going to fish. A place a bit off the beaten path so we could focus on fishing.

Mike Winstone from Houston joined me on Friday for a bit of prefishing. We had several fish from the teens into the high 20's, but no 30's. We did manage a 40+ buff(Fought like a wet pillow case) and another mid-30 that fought as well as a carp. Strange fish those buffs. Mike needed to get back home so he bailed on me. It was good to see him as we once fished LBL together on a regular basis, but having families now has put a slow down on that happening as often.

They arrive with breakfast in hand Saturday. I already had the rods out as I knew they were on the way. I cover a few basics with Amber and just as I sit down the first rod goes off. Show time! I started coaching Amber about getting the rod tip high and reeling down from 12'o'clock to 10 o'clock. "Pull up, Reel Down".. She is doing pretty good for a first timer. About then the second rods goes screaming off. So I grab it while I'm playing this one I'm still coaching. Amber's carp goes to the far right and gets into a few branches. I've been giving my carp some serious tick, looks to be in the high 20's/low 30's knowing it wouldn't count I'm wanting to get it in maybe get a few pics than get the bait back out. About this time the 3rd rod goes off(unheard of for LBL) so I tell Amber to drop her rod and grab it. I get my fish just to the net and pull the hook! DOH! that's what I get for rushing things. Amber's fish now on rod 3 gets into a snag so it's back to rod 1. We get it out of the limbs and she lands it. 23-4..not bad for a newbie.

All 3 rods are now destroyed! So it was going to take me a bit to get them back in the water. I was fishing Dynamites new carp tec Pineapple boilies, PVA sticks/Stick mix contained ground Pineapple boilies, bread crumb, pineapple liquid, Dynamite Hemp seed, Dynamite Sweet corn and a few other goodies) Every few hours or after a run I'd add a 20-30 more boilies with a throwing stick to the area. I never really put a lot of bait in at one time. After we hit Town Lake regulary '01'-03/'04 where heavy baiting seemed to work well it seemed that just light baiting began to work better after the early days for the larger fish. Also this is where I cut my teeth on boilies which took me a while to get used to using. It proved in my mind to be the way to go if you wanted bigger than average fish on this lake over time. So I stayed with that game plan from 4/5 years ago.

I never did get to eat my breakfast sandwich or drink my coffee they were so kind to bring me.

After about an hour of re-tying everything and getting the rods back out we hit a few high teens, but after the intial chaos of the morning which we had never reappeared. So Sunday morning we'd try again.

Sunday the wind had shifted out of the east(kiss of death many times IMO) but the fish were there early in the morning as I was setting up. By the time the cameraman(Ed) and Amber arrived again 8am 'ish with breakfast things had gone real quiet. We had 1 fish on Saturday which did up Amber's PB by a couple of pounds.. So not a total loss.

I told them as they left Saturday evening. "Lets try and be here and get set up before the sun rises in the morning."

I get a call at 6:30 am on Monday they are on the way, good deal. I'm almost set up as they arrive Monday morning. This is our last shot at a 30+ but we'd had a good time and got some good footage playing fish. Also some carp angling info that should make for a decent show. So no pressure really, it was good just to spend some time back in Austin. I really love that place and it's very special to me. Austin has treated me very well over the last decade that included 2 state records back-to-back from the early days. I have no idea how many 30's, but probably about half of the 90+ 30's I've caught, if I had to guess, have come from this lake.

Monday morning and its fairly quiet. We are just having breakfast and talking about footage Ed would like to get when the left rod goes off. Amber runs to grab her fighting belt and gets ready to go. It was amazing how far she'd come since Saturday morning. I was really proud of her as she was a true pro at playing a trophy fish now. As we were getting the fish to the net I thought about going over to loosen the drag just a bit, but everything seemed to be going OK filming wise so I decided to not interrrupt. 10 yds out and the hook pulls just as the fish rolls and it looks to be a good one.. total bummer. My fault for not going with my gut feeling and loosening the drag.

We settle back down after I re-bait and re-cast and the right rod goes off she had this fish in sight which was a high teen when the middle rod went off. I instructed her to hand me rod and grab the new run. As I was finishing landing this fish she was really putting a bend in this rod and I continued to coach. "lean back, reel down..steady" I think it helped she was proabably a bit tired after all the previous action because she seemed very patient now. As the fish pulled off drag she'd just keep the rod tip high and let it go(vs. continuing to reel like early on) After about 10 minutes she had the fish in sight. It looked to be a good one and could possibly be over 30? After 1 last run as it appraoched the net she turned it and took a couple steps back and I was able to net it. Moment of truth now. I was guessing it to probably be around 29-12. That would be just my luck. :D Oh well it had been a fun trip and and great excuse to visit Austin and get a curry at the Clay Pit. I put it in the previously zeroed weigh sling and the fish on the Reuben.. 31lbs 8oz! Swwweeeeeeet. :)

Gave Amber a high 5 and told her "Thank you very much!" :) . But I have to say I may have been happier/more proud about the road we'd just traveled in a short amount of time. I'm still fairly competitive(even at my old age) so when I can meet the challenge in front of me I still get a rush from that.

We waited for another run, but the morning bite had seemed to evaporate once again. It was time to pack up all of us head back to Oklahoma.

The filming of this was for a pilot show project. We'd accomplished the objective of our show. If the series makes the cut and is aired in the future I'll let everyone know.

  4. Orchie,

I love exploring new places like this. If you do have some smaller lakes 100-300 acres I'd look at those.

Norfolk is a great looking venue though. I've found just pick an area like in the pic and forget about the rest until you've checked it out. Sping time the fish will be more concentrated which will make it easier.

I'd bait up the ones one evening(red X) then watch them and see which one(s) has activity. The fish tend to give themselves away when they are present.

Don't get frustrated. If you blank that could be a good thing. Not many small ones?

  5. Orchie,

With the cooler weather moving in the fish should move to the main parts of the lake and out of the arms. Bidwell Point is where I would start this time of year most likely by the bridge. You are right, lakes like this you could spend the rest of your life trying to figure out.

I'd ask the locals where they see the fish while out fishing for other species also.

Once you get a feel for it let me know and I'll hook up the boat and come over and do a session with you. :)

    Good Luck man!

  6. Hello Orchie,

You should be in a great area to carp fish.

Taneycomo at Branson is worth a look. Fellows lake just north of Branson is good. Had mid 20's there years ago. Phone even caught a few there! :)

I'm about 2.5 hours east of those areas. Shoot me a PM and maybe we can meet up some time.

Good Luck and let us know how you do.

  7. Hello Chris,

Sorry for the delay, but replies like this from my iPhone are a bit too complicated for me. :D

First time on Blackfoot in '03

Can't believe its been 7+ years now since I visited this place. I even had short hair. :)

The one thing I remember most about the trip was the carp were on strawberrry boilies 4/5 to 1 over maize or anything else. Most fish we had were low 20's, I think we had 70 mirrors in 72 hours? I did also managed to get my ID 30 which was cool.

Several anglers have visited since then and may have more recent info than I have. Dale has done very well there so he would be the one to talk to in more detail.

This was one of those trips that keeps me addicted to exploring new places.

I think ID in general has loads of potential so good luck and enjoy. Be sure and keep us up to date on how you do.

  8. That's something I keep meaning to do aswell..... I've been looking at the Catch-It app.... anyone use it or know of a better one?

For carp angling I've yet to find an app I would recommend.

Pen and paper filling out my excel spreadsheet is still the best option IMO.

Like Iain mentioned its amazing the difference when I fished the same water time after time and how much those notes helped.

When someone builds a app all the info can be preset and all you need to enter "Add Catch" and "Rod #" it will be pretty cool.

  9. McTage,

I didn't get to try it as much as I wanted this year. But did check a few places out locally to work on next year.

Probably the highlight was meeting you and some others in Denver, CO at the Carp Slam which was an A+ time. Hope to see you again in 2011.

  11. CARP TOURNAMENT SERIES LEAVES HARTFORD

“Tournament of Champions” Will Move To New Venue In 2012

Carp Angling Elite Competition Succumbs to Regional Economy

Bartlesville OK—The most prestigious carp anglers from around the United States and several foreign countries found the tidal currents of the Connecticut River a real test of their stamina and angling expertise when Hartford hosted the CARP Tournament Series Tournament of Champions at Great River Park for the past two years. The demanding conditions of the river earned the contest the reputation as an ultra-challenge competition in carp angling circles. However, the Oklahoma-based CARP Tournament Series learned this week that the currents in the regional economy in southern New England – particularly the greater Hartford area – put their third year in Hartford at risk due to sponsor fallout. Organizers hoped that they would be able to fulfill their three-year obligation to Hartford with anglers lined-up to attend this year from Texas, North Carolina, Illinois, Wisconsin, Ohio, New York, England, Romania and Poland. But those hopes were dashed with the news that a major sponsor was backing out.

This year would have been CARP Tournament Series 7th Annual Tournament of Champions which the organization moved from Lake Hominy in Oklahoma to Hartford’s city center in 2008 after being persuaded by a local alliance to bring the event to the Connecticut River.

“CARPTS has never cancelled a tournament in our history of producing tournaments throughout the United States,” said David Moore, CARPTS tournament director. “We have an obligation to our circuit anglers to guarantee prize monies that we publically advertise, and when our underwriter advised us that the monies would not be escrowed as pledged over the three-year term, we had no choice but to protect our integrity and uphold our promise to the anglers.”

“We’re truly saddened by this turn of events. We’ve seen an interest in Hartford gain momentum among carp anglers for leisure and competitive angler since we’ve spotlighted this venue and the Connecticut River will always have some great memories for our anglers. We’re grateful to Mr. Ted Carrier who had the vision to invite us to Hartford as well as the Riverfront Recapture, the Greater Hartford Convention and Visitors Bureau, Cabela’s, the City of East Hartford, the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection as well as the local restaurants, shops and hotels for their assistance the past two years.”

In the meantime, CARPTS is eyeing a new venue for the Tournament of Champions in 2012, and organizers are confident this occurrence was a regional issue which will not affect any plans for tournaments in the future. The organization is hosting the Carp Angling World Championship on the St. Lawrence River in September 2011 where over 100 teams of international anglers have already committed to that contest.
