  1. Here in NC we believe haven’t yet found the best good carp fishing locations, and are always looking for and scouting out new locations that may have the potential to become a new place to catch that elusive NC 30… or bigger.

As part of our exploration process, one Sunday morning last summer I set off on a journey to look at a few of the big blue spots on the map within driving distance. I eventually stopped at one of those ‘spots near a ramp’ and to my great surprise caught a 20 Lb common first cast. For various reasons that bank spot did not turn out to be an ideal fishing spot, so I marked the lake as somewhere to explore later.

This spring I hooked up the boat and started to explore the several thousand acres of this lake. When it’s just you and a great big deep, clear lake it feels a bit daunting. I marked likely areas on my map as I found them. For me, fishing them one by one is most credible approach – unless the fish give me some pointers to make it easier to decide, that is. After making 4 or 5 trips without seeing anything to get me excited I felt it was time to just fish and see what happens. In late May pulled up at a spot that appeared to have the right structure, and was pleased to catch 6 commons between 10 and 18Lbs in a day’s fishing. The response and sheer number of fish surprised me, and I decided to prebait – heavily(!) – before I fished next.

Went back last weekend, hoping that some bigger fish may get drawn into the area. On arrival on Friday evening, the fish were again visible in the general area. I topped up the bait , but nothing got hooked by around 10p so I retreated to see what the next day would bring.

Dennis met the at the ramp early on Sat and we chugged to the new spot. Dennis had had our first fish around 8am, and the fish moved over to my side of the swim in late morning, with one period around lunchtime when it was hard to keep all the rods out. We ended up having had a most productive day. 14 fish were landed, and a good number more lost on bad snags. Pretty much every one we hooked had to be dragged away from some sort of snaggery as soon as it was hooked. Some simply didn’t come out, even with the boat right above. I now have some ideas on how to better approach them next time (thanks, Col)..

These fish had almost certainly never been fished for before, and K1 Maize and wafters seemed to be very acceptable to them from the start. I’ve also started to use K1’s EZ IN 4 hooks, and have been very impressed how good the holds are with these (they frequently resulted in double hooking).

The smallest one we caught on sat was around 12 Lbs everything else being mid doubles upwards. The best 3 came towards the end of the day at 20-10, 19-8 and 21-7, with a bonus Mirror carp of 16 Lbs or so. It was almost as if the smaller & more active fish had to move on before the slightly bigger ones got their heads down..

I fished the next morning until the ski boat wakes made life impossible. Another 21Lb’er turned up early, again on a wafter, and unfortunately 2 more fish were lost to the snags.

All in all an encouraging session, leaving us to wonder how to land more of the fish we hooked, and how to find out if they grow bigger. Hope to get there again sometime this summer and find out. It does seem that a boat and depthfinder is a huge aid to making fishing on these big lakes viable.

  2. globetrotters carp quest?

more like freeloaders bumming trip whilst walking round with your knob hanging out.

edited to add that there is no way you could hold a 44kg fish at arms length. cheap publicity shot?

Tony is a great wildlife photographer, Andrew (IMHO) and has been around the carp scene (originally in the Uk Colne Valley I recollect) for an extremely long time.

I'd be surprised and disappointed if this is a fake.

Now interestedly watching for more info to leak out on this 'monster'

  7. Good luck to all of you - especially those who are travelling far - and loaded. Hope you all arrive safely, and that the cold temps do not make the endurance event even more challenging for you.

I'll be watching your progress virtually from my office desk :)

  8. An amazing angler, Jim. He knows his stuff. The big fish results he gets are simply astonishing. He was writing in one the comics (ACF) recently about a long common he was trying for that eats in the edge - wonder if it was that one? little tail, big belly.....

  9. my first NC carp still eludes me. No worries, I'm sure it will happen soon. :)

I'm sure it will too --- though our local carp seem to have degrees themselves some days.

Send us some big shark pictures when you next go!
