  1. Pre-tournament venue report - Illinois River at Ottawa, IL

The July 28th three-in-one all species tournament could be a challenge for participants if my July 24th session at the venue is any indication.

I fished to the west of the pre-determined pegged area from 5:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. and caught five fish: three commons and two grassies. Lots of fish were surfacing at the beginning of the day, including some Asian carp.

The weather was warm as I arrived at Ottawa (85 degrees), but the venue looked promising as the sun rose on the Illinois.

I quickly caught two fish before 6:30 a.m. including the six pound common pictured below.

However, an approaching shelf cloud between 6:30 and 7:00 did not bode well for future catches.

Although Ottawa did not get the deluge and the accompanying winds that those nearer to Chicago were subjected to, it did get windy with whitecaps on the river and churned up water.

The front that passed through turned the fish off, and I just caught three more in the ensuing four hours.

Hopefully, conditions will be more stable on July 28.

River levels are a little low, but depths are still very good ten feet off the bank and beyond.

I threw a thermometer into the river, and it registered 82 degrees (get the rice and millet pack ready, boys!)

    Good luck to all.--Frank

    Tournament website here!

You fished out the venue :angry2: Now all the illinois river fish are conditioned to youre method mix :angry2: Do any of us really have a chance now come saturday?

  2. Don't eliminate the possibility that the venue will move to a river for the August session.

Congrats to the Will County boys whose Aldi method mixes and Westside artificials brought them the top two places and big fish of the day on July 15. I suppose it's just further proof that you don't need a big sign by your peg or a multi- colored, walking-ad polo shirt to do well in a sport as simplistic as carp fishing.

 I suppose it's just further proof that you don't need a big sign by your peg or a multi- colored, walking-ad polo shirt to do well in a sport as simplistic as carp fishing.

  3. Since we are lamenting what could have been or should have been, total weight winner Mike (peg 4) and 2nd total weight winner and first big fish winner Larry (peg 9) should share their winnings with our Romanian friends. At the first draw of pegs, Juan had peg 4 and I had peg 9. When the Romanians unexpectedly showed up, we re-drew, and Juan and I lost those honey holes to Mike and Larry. I think you two should share your winnings with your Romanian benefactors! :P

Honeyholes  there wasnt a honeyhole in the house today.

  4. Il save the details for Tracy or Frank. Hot today, thing we all got sunburn. Had good a time, as always. Just hoping for better bite next month.

Would have been all mine except for that last beast that headed due east and didnt stop untill cut off by zebra mussel with 4 mins to go.

Oh ya there was a full moon out his morning, ask Frank an Ed they seen her, lol :barf::icon_smoking:

I'm 100% positive that last run you had was a catfish or a salmon, so I wouldnt dwell on that too much. So close but yet so far :P

  5. The venue is producing very well this morning, hope this keeps up till sunday. So far 9 fish is 2 hrs with biggest 19-12. Im going to move around and try several of the areas.

Ill keep the updates coming throughout the day

  6. Lake Michigan has 1600 miles of shoreline. Im not to good at math but i think that figures out to about 100 miles of bank per angler.

That should be plent for most of us. What do you think Mike? :angry2::icon_smoking:

That is alot of bank space , i hope to god my rod never gets pulled in, it would probably be hard to find if someone didnt catch it right away

  7. Good job tracy on running another quality session. I had a good time im looking foward to future events. There is a good chance I will miss the session at montrose next month, due to the hoosier carper team event on the ohio river, but i will be at the remainder of the sessions regardless of my standing in the league at that time. I guess I have to make a choice here in the next few weeks or so ;)
