1st Congrats on a great mirror they are always a welcom suprize, Also..........

love a little info on the swims you fish, Rivers? Lakes? Ponds? what are some of the other speices that you might run into while carp fishing, Suckers, Buffalo, Catfish, thanks, =Z=

  3. To date, this sounds really bad but I think the first time my bass angling eye's fell onto a rod pod, and those awsome rods, then the same trip I saw a 11lb not a large fish but to me it was abslutley a monster i was thrilled and the other angler I was with just was not that impressed with it I was running around taking pictures blown away and thats what it is all about i think, I knew that I had found my nitch havent look back since and that was just about a year ago, :D can't wait till the day I turn a die hard bass angler

Thanks DFW rough Fishing CREW :D

  4. In texas they are farily common, this summer we had a session where some where around 17 fish where caught and the smallest was about 8lbs largest was 24lb I think =Z=

here is a picture of typical TX buff that Carpaholic caught I think they tend to be a little flatter and a little "taller" for lack of a better word then carp

  5. This was taking from a another site and reposted here with permission, just thought others might enjoy reading it as much as I did....=Z=

Let me first say that I am not terribly successfull fishing for carp

with a fly rod. The way I fish for carp is GREATLY inferior to the

way most of you fish for carp on this list, if success is defined as

number of fish caught or even pounds of fish caught. This year, in

about 10-20 outings where I targeted carp, from all-day affairs to

just an hour here and there, I only hooked up with carp 5 times. I

only touched two of those fish, the others were lost at some point

during the battle. One at the very end and two immediately after the

initial bolt, before the first run could really get underway.

There are a lot of different ways to fly fish for carp. The lines

get kind of blurry. Some people use a fly rod to throw bait (whether

or not they chummed the carp in first) such as corn or bread or

marshmellows or whatever. According to the IGFA this is not fly

fishing, but I'm sure the people who do it find it very enjoyable.

Some people will chum up carp and then cast a fly designed to imitate

the chum. There are corn flies, bread flies, pellet flies-- almost

any imaginable food source. This isn't considered outright cheating

in most fly fishing circles, the IGFA has nothing against chumming

when claiming records, but many circles or many individual fly

fishers see chumming as a non-fly fishing technique. I won't say

I've never tried this, Zach sent me somewhere with a loaf of bread

once. I didn't turn up any carp but I was there rigged with my bread

    flies!

The way I normally fish for carp, and most fly fishers go at it, is

the same as stalking a redfish on a saltwater flat. I must first

find carp, hopefully feeding carp. After finding the carp, I have to

stay undetected and move into a casting position. Then I have to

cast the fly so that it lands within inches of the carp's head, but

without spooking it, and without "lining" the carp. Lining is a

mistake, it's the name for a cast where the fly line or leader

actually lands right above the carp on the water. The sudden shadow

and splash (however minute) usually cause the carp to bolt. If the

carp is still there, and still feeding, I have to make it interested

in my fly by giving it some action. However many times the action of

the fly causes the carp to bolt. If it doesn't, and I can see the

fly clearly (not very likely except in extremely good circumstances),

I have a chance. If the carp eats and I see it I can set the hook.

If it eats and I don't see it, usually it will blow it out and/or

bolt. If I can see the carp, I can read its body language to

determine if it is eating my fly and try to set the hook, although

this will usually make the carp bolt.

As far as flies, carp will eat almost anything. Commons typically

eat nymphs, small minnows, and crayfish-- food they prefer over

grasses and algae. Typically the fly on the end of my line is a

suggestive nymph, meaning the fly is not very detailed. It may have

a couple of legs and/or tails but mostly it's a fluffy fly in the

approximately correct colors designed to trigger the carp to eat.

Occasionally I'll throw a very small minnow imitation, a fly maybe

only half as long as my pinky. Many of the nymphs I throw will fit

on my thumbnail. You can understand how seeing that on the bottom

from several feet away might be problematic :D

Usually if a carp eats my fly, it's a casual slurp. However on more

than one occasion a carp has caught sight of my fly and charged it

from some distance. I had a couple this year that caught sight of my

fly when I did an erratic retrieve of a baitfish imitation and I saw

the carp charging the fly, swimming straight at me, and then put on

the brakes as we saw each other since my fly was too close to me.

You can purchase a fly rod and do any number of things with it to

catch a carp. Because a typical fly rod is around 9 feet long, a

carp feels even stronger on one than a typical 6' baitcasting rig.

At least that's what I've heard. I'm a fly fisher only, it's just

that I don't know how to fish any other way and I spend enough time

and money fly fishing that I don't really have a desire to learn.

BUT the point is the longer rod gives more advantage to the fish.

You can catch very, very large fish on fly rods. People will land

billfish on fly rods, and you've all seen the occasional pictures of

a fly fisher with a 200-pound tarpon. My point is, you can use a fly

rod in a number of ways, but mostly when you think of fly fishing for

carp, it's the way I've described above:

hunt the carp; present to the carp; entice the carp; read the body

language; set the hook; hold on tight-- fish fighting ability comes

    in here.

One last note about fly rods that often goes missed in conversations

like this. A major difference between fly fishing and all other

kinds of rod and reel fishing is that fly reels are for the most part

direct drive. What that means is there is no slip drag. I can't

just crank a carp in when I feel like it. Either the carp is taking

line or I am. The extra challenge here is when the carp runs

straight at me, I must convert to hand stripping line, and when it

turns away I want to get it "back on the reel", in other words,

running against my drag, as quickly as possible to wear the fish

out. Of course this means that I have dangling fly line I'm trying

to reel up quickly without wrapping around my feet, or rocks, or

    branches.

Fly fishing for carp is extremely challenging. The rewards, the rush

of landing a fish, is incredible. But you have to remember like I

said in the beginning, going at it the way I do is not nearly as

effective as the techniques that you guys use. We get our kicks in

different ways: you get your kicks fighting a big fish or fighting

many fish in a sitting. I get my kicks when I finally reach a pay-

off for many days of carp fishing. We probably hit similiar

adrenaline levels, we just get there from different starting places!

  6. as brian mention I was going to meet him and we where gonna leave

3:00am or so....at about 10:30 that night I headed out all packed up

and ready to go brian ask if I could swing by walmart on the way

over as it was on my way no prob well made it to walmart baought all

kinds of carpy things came out and my tire decied to go flat whilest

I was buying all those carpy things I proceded to "try" and change

it but the term FUBAR comes to mind so I when back into walmart

bought some fix a flat 2 cans later my tire was up sort of I headed

to the nearest gas station to a air compresser so that worked for

about 10 min. until it was clear that I was losing air so I went I

got 2 more cans of fix a flat and headed home I was going to use the

cans take my car to the discount tire and be good to go be in austin

by 11:00 well that was a good idea that being settled when my room

some darts as this is my second hobby well we had a great time we

came home piled out of the car ate our jack in the box and I went to

my room and crashed well in the mean time tommy <thats my room mate>

we had alot of catching up to do cause a 30 pack of keystone later

we where still catching up :D and there were quite a few people

there now <HOT CHICKS> and they brought more should we say <catch up

juice> and we made margritas and I think we got in a pool well

eventuly all this fun became to much for me I belive that was around
