Good point mike like I said, "it's all in what you're trying to achieve" being narrow minded is never a good thing in this sport. All options are viable in their situation.

I'll never understand why anyone would want budget priced hooks- it's the only piece of kit that comes into contact with the fish so why rely on an Ebay special or bulk offer. Pay a couple of bucks more for quality and peace of mind. Korda, Gardner Mugga, and my personnal favourite Nash Fang X are all excellent hooks. Wouldn't dream of using a poor quality hook and risking losing a good fish, or even PB because it failed.
My sentiments exactly, I always found it funny that bass guys spend $50,000 on a boat and high end rods and reels, and buy cheap hooks! Lets not stoop to their level. LOL, kidding, although there are circumstances where a less expensive but still decent quality hook may be a better choice than the expensive ones(my favorite Nash fang twisters). Like a very gravel-ly bottomed swim or very dense snag filled area. That being said, I think one reaches a level or point in their angling where they would use the best quality hooks regardless of the situation to as Darren said "not risk losing a big fish or pb". Everything seems to change as ones angling matures. It all depends on what you're trying to achieve. Darren I very much like you're thinking.

I'm sure that most popular knots could be declared "100%" knots depending on what brand or type of line used. What works for some may not for others and vice versa. Palomar has its place, as does the trilene, which was the first knot I ever learned as a kid, the uni, blood and clinch knot. All I can say is that with the 18# mono I use (Korda subline) the uni knot is fantastic and I am extremely confident in it. Cool find on those vids shawn! I'll have to subscribe to their channel! All knowledge is good knowledge!

Uni knot for me, it's as close to 100% knot strength as you can get and can also be used to join two lines together so it's great for leaders. I like to be confident my knot will not fail.

Thats a nice one rebel! The sussy coughs up some pretty nice fish eh! congrats on the PB!

I've had lots of the "snub nose" carp from our river, yes mike the sussy=] actually, my first 30 ever was a snub nose.

I'm glad you made out better then I did. What size boilies did you start out with? For the warmer sessions (next year) I'm going to experiment with some sweet corn flavored boilies. If nothing on the sweet corn boilies (Im going to throw out field corn/sweet corn with the boilies during prebaiting and during the session), I'm going to try the bread tactic. Get some boilies and add some bread flavor to the boilies and do a 3 day baiting using strictly bread and bread flavored boilies... Im sure I will think of something after that. Maybe throw out birdseed to match birdseed boilies. Or grits with grits boilies. Or tiger nuts and tiger nut pellets using tiger nut boilies................. We shall see!
There was also a 42 captured last year, and a beautiful fish at that. It was pre baited with dog food no less, and then caught on a worm, by a recreational angler. This is why I focus on the river as much as I can.
Barbel, didn't the patomic cough up a 57? In the basin?
Our state record at 50.6 is from a res, that has also accounted for many many many 40's to 48+ besides the 50 and that's just what we know, there are many guys that don't publicize at all. I like the chick pea idea!
-
Rebel, as we spoke about before, we fish the same river, and there are indeed carp over 40 in it, I've had many low to mid 30's to 37.8 from her whomb and am dead set on having a 40 from home as well. Barbel said something that could possibly be one of the best points and also most overlooked points in catching big fish. Fish where you are confident. Although not all areas will hold big fish if you are confident they are there and you put the time in it will happen. Ps, I've never done a boilie campaign on the river, I focus more on fishing where they are than trying to bring them to me, but there's no doubt it works. Good luck man.

I will be putting mine to the test for the first time tomorrow. I very much like the idea of line clips even before the delkim line clips were announced just for the reasons Brian stated. Any added indication can only be good!

Nice read guys, well done.

I agree with jason(KARPER) the reason the fish are there is because of the weeds so you want to take advantage of that. Light lead, long leader, PVA bag or mesh or method. Weed fishing can be insanely good if you can get your rig in without tangling. In, on, or below the weeds can all be good. What I would try to do initially is fish just in front of the weed, as close as possible(a few inches could make the difference between blanking and hauling) and sit on the Rods waiting for the take. Don't fear the weed, embrace it.

just stating what I've seen with my own eyes. notice none of the carp in any of jerome's videos were big....in any species young usually equates to dumb so I'm not surprised fish get caught with "old fashioned rigs" and the odd big one. but I've seen with my own two eyes on many occasions spending hours and hours observing, large carp are extremely wary, pressured or not, and will shy away from rigs and line, I've seen it, and i know many others that would agree. But if people want to put in 25% effort then they'll get 25% results. Not arguing just giving my experience.
-
Don't say never will, people are so quick to say that "our fish aren't pressured" and "the fish don't care" when in my experience ive watched Carp shy away from rigs, and line, both 25-50# braid and Rigs that couldn't be more camouflaged, carp are not dumb and pressured or not they shouldnt be treated as such. Unless one is happy catching only the dumb ones, or the blind ones. The fact is, although our fish may not see pressure if you still approach them as of they were it can only help you. Paying attention to details is what makes the difference IMHO. Sure one can get away with bulky super visible line, dull hooks and poorly tied rigs but if you're putting the time in don't you want to get the most out of it? Just my 50 cents. Paying attention never did anything but help. Rigs don't have to be complicated, make sure your hooks are sharp and aren't going to get tangled or twisted and you'll be fine. A standard hair rig is perfect.

I just pissed myself LOL

The first one just looks like a very small juvenile common as where the second one is very obviously not.
-
I second Alex in the use of Korda Subline. Hands down the toughest line I've ever used. Id put it pound for pound against any line braided or not within 50 pounds, I very much love this line and it seems to laugh at zebras.

I'll be there, may need that bed chair and bivvy again rich lol

Very nice!

Thanks everyone!! I'm still in awe!
Chris, I was a little surprised, when playing the fish I knew it was big, then I saw the shoulder, then the width, which of you saw my fb teaser pic of it in the sack was sickeningly wide, then as I pulled her over the string I let out a big sigh, thought no effin way!! Then the dial swing past the magic number and settled back at 37.7, man was I pumped, just fuels my fire and I know when it's my time it will be my time.

Sorry about the multiple posts, intermittent service in my office sometimes. I guess the best advice that can be taken from all these posts is do what you feel is best, test them yourself. Hell, we're all just giving opinions after all.
