  1. I've found that even without the overwrap a small heater can keep you plenty warm. BUT! An overwrap keeps you cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter by creating a gap between the inner and outer skins. Air is an insulator and the winter skin helps keep condensation down as well but when using a heater there is no way around the condensation. I recently got rid of my chub s plus for a jrc Brolly system without an overwrap and am regretting in. So I will be reinvesting in a bivvy with overwrap.

  2. I think an important and overlooked thing here is, are the lighter rods designed or meant to be casted with heavy leads and method? No! Can some? Yes. But my question is will it affect the rod over time? Yea maybe you can cast a 4oz lead and method on the st. Croixs but having owned them I wouldn't suggest it. Here's a story for you, I was fishing on one of the finger lakes, many, many big fish, had a slow deliberate run around 4 am, set Into the fish, very, very heavy. I kneel down to scoop the net and the rod(st croix avid 2 weeks old) snaps in half...cOuld it have been a fluke? A one time deal? Most likely. But enough to cause me to lose faith in them. I would stick to rods that can and are MEANT to do what you need them too. I'm sure if you bought the st croix and while casting snapped your rod in half from too much weight you'd have many regrets.

  3. thanks mike and val! its been dreadfully slow around here, lack of rain and algea blooms as a result, havent had a real decent fish in almost 2 months, has the hudson slowed too? Im sure the fall feed and cool weather will bring you one soon! The photo was taken by a passer by and he wasnt very tech inclined so it was quite an ordeal to get a decent shot, had to lighten the shadows a bit as the sun was brutally not in our favor. Normally I have my own personal photographer with me ( my girlfriend lolol) but she was busy tonight. Always seems to work that way! Tanks again!

  4. Very good post mike, dead on to me. I like Chris prefer a heavy rod and mono as 99% of my fishing is nasty snags. Nate, think of it this way, the factor in both equations is the give of either rod or line. Heavy rod stretchy mono, your 'give' come from the line. Light rod and braid your 'give' comes from the rod. Are they equal to eachother? Absolutely not! I had a fish in a snag last night at about 85 yards, with the rIg I posted on facebook yesterday and played tug of War through this snag for almost a half an hour before I finally pulled her out of it. As a sidenote, Korda subline is far and away the best mono ive ever had te privledge of using. I'd dare put it pound for pound stronger than 50#pp in tensile strength an abrasion resistance. I against my gut wrenched on that fish last night as hard as I could, rod at max bend and the line showed no signs of breaking but all the stretch I needed to free the fish.

  6. Josh, quick reel question have you hear anything or used a shimano DL4000FA baitrunner?

    Thanks

I personally have never fished with them, but I have seen them and held them and although they have a rather odd spool (deep and short) they seem to do well in short to medium range fishing and as most shimanos go are very well made and strong. I looked away from baitrunner style reels a while ago and don't plan on turning back. I like the more streamlined quick drag style reels or as shimano has come up with the baitrunner spool, basically just a quick drag with a fine tuning ability to make more or less 'quick'.

  7. Grats! They are a different breed up there compared to what I'm used to. They seem a lot stronger and more energetic then the fish from my local river!

    Awesome stuff! Congrats!

Matt, fishing everywhere I have I have to say that bville fish fight the absolute worst!!! Come down to my area and I will show you true power! Even more than Larry fish!

  8. Oops, that's what I get for responding to a thread hastily read, first thing in the am lol. I know very little about float fishing so Shawn's your guy there. I should've read more carefully. My apologies. Good luck on your search! I had the 12' st croix acids and quickly sold them, they do not suit my style (euro laker) very well at all but I remember my first impression was what a great casting rod, feels like a fly rod almost but definitely too light for me.

  9. Nate, I knew you'd like the Saxons ;). I consider all non terminal tackle an investment, you get what you pay for and if you buy the absolute bet you can afford from the gate, then you'll save money over time. Not having to replace the cheap gear you bought over and over. Saxons for their price, are untouchable. I love my 3.5's and even though I could have Harrison's of free spirits I'm completely content with my Saxons.

  10. The Greys didnt do it for me either, had a few requests to replace their spreaders as well. My fox extreme other than having to replace the block has lasted a few years and no issues. Some people just need to be shown the proper way, if I could I'd make a quick collapse block so that I can take the arms off and roll the arms and mesh up like the proper way. But in all honesty if I can get away with it I don't even use a net, I unhook them in the water. (I don't like putting the net away wet.

  11. Is your inspecection a visual inspection?? As for me, after each catch, which is very often, I drag the hook on my thumb nail. You can feel what you can't see.

Good question Tom! It's actually both! I look at it and then drag the hook over my nail and run my finger tip over it, the way my dad taught me to check the edge on my hunting knife! I've actually almost given up on sharpening hooks I just toss them if they're dull or give them to my younger brothers for catfishing. But to me a sharp hook is paramount above all!

  12. i base it all on hook sharpness

Nailed it, I also inspect the rest of my rig. Knots, where the strip of the coating meets the braid, where it lasses trough the eye (important to me as this is a pinch point and lots of friction occurs here) to make sure there's no fraying. You never know when your next fish could be your moby dick. Something that drives me on the bank to make sure everything is tip top and sticky sharp.

  13. Te words "metal spreader block" mean very little these days in the way of nets because most of the budget nets and the resistance is one of them are made of cast or pot metal, neither of which should even be called metal. Earlier this year I posted a thread about making my own net block out of 440 stainless and it came out amazing, I must have gotten nearly 100 messages to build one for others, sadly I had to decline but I wish I could've. Most of said people wanted to send me their "metal spreader blocks" from their resistance tackle nets and similar brands. Care must be taken when lifting a fish as Shawn mentioned but I can see where Lorne is coming from, if you are up above the water and don't wish to lay or kneel down to properly lift a fish with a euro net then the converted salmon net as others suggested is a great option. I personally have no use for that type of net but I think mark nailed it with having both. And since you guys can only use one rod you can use the money you'd spend on a second or third for a good quality net. If you go euro style I suggest something very well made, free spirit, solar, high end fox. Just my opinion, words to live by, you get what you pay for.

  14. Seen this quite a while ago, also seen the venue many times in the past in other videos, Daniel had an account on here and has popped up in the past. I do love the video series and it had inspired me in projects I have in the works.

  15. I do not have access to USCP forum. I have long periods of inactivity on here and on there, but I always end up losing access to the USCP forum. I tried to sign up again to no avail. No big deal though.

Yea, it's just a way to keep things tidy, no need for excess screen names if no ones using them. Surprised you weren't able to get back on. Shame you feel that way...I mean there's a lot of great info there.
