  1. The highlight of my morning was Tracy Jourdan showing up with hot chocolate from Starbucks. No fish and no fotos for me but Dan Ramir was kind enough to let me net a few.

Thanks for the help today Paul. That is a nice net and mat you have  .

But isn't that the way it usaually goes, you go out and take the time to pre-chum and someone else catches the fish

BTW. I probably threw the "baby phone award" back in without a picture... go figure :o .

My first fish of the year, yayyypost-3784-0-22441800-1293921381.jpg

Same rod the only one with the red strawberry methodpost-3784-0-60728700-1293921395.jpg

Switched the red strawberry method to another rod... and don't you know! Although this fish looked like it couldn't pass up any snack :lol:post-3784-0-59461100-1293921408.jpg

Thanks Jerome, for getting me out of the house with the FFF. Happy New Year!!!

  2. Er... I don't know if "nuts" does justice to it... Now why don't you truly crazy guys go home, get warm and stay safe until Jan 1st... Then by all means, please get nuts again... ;)

PS. Believe it or not, I can relate to quite a few of the observations you made, Slimy!

No more warming my hands in 32 degree water

 ...I received some handwarmers for Christmas :) .

I do believe that the Chicago river will be lined with "nuts" :jumpy: for the FFF on Janurary 1st 2011.

    :thewave: Happy New Year!! :thewave:

  3. Milwaukee weather and peg predictions: Your guess is as good as mine

The Midwest Winter Carp League’s Group D traveled to Milwaukee on the day after Christmas despite forecasts for 8 to 12 inched of lake effect snow. Roads were a little touchy from Hinsdale to O’Hare, but once we got to Wisconsin, it was smooth sailing. In fact, there was only an inch or so of snow on the ground at our league venue. So much for weather predictions.

Zenon Jastrzebski was unable to make the session due to a family commitment, but the other Group D members arrived safely for their peg draw. Luke Bober drew 5, Henry Burza-4, Ernest Kolodziejczyk-3, and Frank Rink-1. Typically, peg 5 is the big producer, but peg one held most of the fish on December 26. At the end of the day, Frank Rink had 5 points, followed by Henry Burza (4), Ernest Kolodziejczyk (3) and Luke Bober (1). So much for peg predictions.

Frank Rink won the big fish pot (14-5) on a WCB 16mm pineapple pop-up boilie. Water temps varied from 48 degrees on the surface at peg 1 to 56 degrees on the bottom at pegs 4 and 5. The weather for the session alternated between sun and clouds (mostly clouds) with temperatures in the mid-20’s and a north breeze. Happy New Year.! --Frank Rink

Good report Frank and Congratulations! :yourock:

It is odd how peg 5 has shut down. Peg 1 is sure earning a good reputation.

  4. Things I learned at yesterdays Winter Carp League:

    • Carp fishing can be done in gale force winds.

    • Tournament carp anglers can be insanely competitive. (my wife used the word “nuts”) :)

    • Never regret buying a good ice fishing suit and high quality boots.

    • Wear safety glasses in blowing snow and white out conditions. (and when launching ground bait with a sling)

    • Never set up a brolly in 40 mph winds. (this still makes me sad  )

    • A rachet-strap comes in handy to secure a chair to a pole. (or angler)

    • Never ever let go of the chair after removing the rachet-strap. (thanks for the help retrieving it Paul :) )

    • Anchors for the legs of the pod really do come in handy. (and long railroad spikes)

    • A full bucket tied to your pod will help keep the pod from blowing away.

    • Make sure the rear rod supports on your pod grasp the rods securely.

    • Stay close to your pod during wind gusts. (and hold on tight)

    • Adjust for windage when casting. (about 30 clicks at 100’ into the wind)

    • With help from the wind, I can cast over 200 yards. (into trees brush or anything else on opposite shore :P )

    • Use back leads to keep the lines in the water and out of the wind.

    • PowerPro will not freeze up on the reel.

    • A bucket of partly frozen water can feel warm to your cold hands. (32 degree water can feel warm)

    • A frozen hand towel will still dry hands. (this hurts but is amazingly true :D )

    • Never spill water next to the pod. (unless you have spikes on the soles of your boots)

    • A net can be frozen stuck to the ground.

    • And , yes Brid, carp do feed in 42 degree water! ;)

Groups A, C, and D will never have a good enough excuse not to fish on their assigned dates this winter! :)

  5. Because of the winter storm warning for Milwaukee, I vote for Saturday or any other day.

If this changes, I’m in for tomorrow.

    WINTER STORM WARNING

in effect until Sunday, Dec 12, 6:00 PM

...WINTER STORM WARNING IN EFFECT FROM MIDNIGHT TONIGHT TO 6 PM CST SUNDAY...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN MILWAUKEE/SULLIVAN HAS ISSUED A WINTER STORM WARNING FOR SNOW AND BLOWING SNOW...WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM MIDNIGHT TONIGHT TO 6 PM CST SUNDAY. THE WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IS NO LONGER IN EFFECT.

    * TIMING...RAIN WILL DEVELOP THIS AFTERNOON...AND MIX WITH SNOW THIS EVENING. LAKESHORE AREAS MAY NOT SEE THE MIX CHANGE TO ALL SNOW UNTIL MIDNIGHT. SNOW WILL THEN CONTINUE ON SUNDAY.

    * SNOW ACCUMULATIONS...3 TO 6 INCHES OF SNOW IS POSSIBLE TONIGHT AND SUNDAY...WITH HIGHER AMOUNTS POSSIBLE IN WAUKESHA COUNTY.

    * WINDS...STRONG NORTHWEST TO NORTH WINDS OF 30 TO 35 MPH...WITH GUSTS TO 45 MPH...WILL DEVELOP ON SUNDAY...AND LAST INTO SUNDAY NIGHT.

    * IMPACTS...BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOW...AND REDUCED VISIBILITIES WILL MAKE TRAVEL HAZARDOUS...ESPECIALLY ON SUNDAY AND SUNDAY NIGHT.

    PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A WINTER STORM WARNING FOR SNOW AND BLOWING SNOW MEANS SEVERE WINTER WEATHER CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED. SIGNIFICANT AMOUNTS OF SNOW AND WIND ARE FORECAST THAT WILL MAKE TRAVEL DANGEROUS. ONLY TRAVEL IN AN EMERGENCY. IF YOU MUST TRAVEL...KEEP AN EXTRA FLASHLIGHT...FOOD...AND WATER IN YOUR VEHICLE IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY.

  6. That's a good idea if the event is held. The Iron Horse Hotel, just across the river from the venue, looks dated from the outside, but many reviews say it's the best hotel in Milwaukee. It's a little pricey, but you guys have Longcast reels and Grey rods everywhere, so I assume one or two nights at a hotel aren't a problem. Good luck, Group B. Be safe!--Frank

    :D:P:)

  7. Dan,

We just got an update here in Rockford that stated this storm may be moving further south than the original forecast. They are now calling for much more snow and sustained winds of 50MPH from Saturday night through Sunday noon. The warning was that travel might not be possible.

    Thats quite a forecast.

    Thanks for the update Larry.

  8. Well, here we go. Group B is scheduled to fish this Sunday. All forecasts are calling for non stop snow, winds to 40mph and wind chill temperatures well below 0. This is a winter tournament after all and I relish the challenge!

I am sure all 5 participating anglers are preparing their gear for this battle. We have all previously fished in cold conditions and know how to prepare and what to expect.

I do have a big concern. Most anglers travel about two hours average on expressways to this venue and if forecasts prove true, travel times will be up sharply because of road conditions.

IS IT WISE TO TRAVEL TO THIS TOURNAMENT DURING A SNOW/ICE STORM?

There are no provisions in the rules for the tournament concerning this safety issue.

Will there be a cutoff or alternative date if the weather proves to be too hazardous to drivers?

  9. Hello, my name is James Hill. I have been a CAG member now for about 2 years , and an avid carp fisherman for 12. Started paylake fishing at Lake Anne and have been hooked ever since. I work for Delta Airlines as an aviation machinist and also run my own business on the side (machine shop). Married with 4 kids.

    Good to know.

If you have British Standard Dies you may find some business here :)
