  1. Barbelfloat,

Great write up! You are truly the specimen hunter!

There is nothing quite as satisfying as when a plan comes together!

Probably because of the many competitions in my area, I have always leaned towards the competitive side of carp fishing. In my opinion, quantity of fish demands smaller hooks. During a tournament this past weekend, I was delighted to find myself in the rare situation that instead of more fish, a large fish was needed. I switched one rig to what I consider a large hook( #2), snowmanned a couple of bollies and placed this just outside the baited area. That rod stayed quiet for about an hour before taking off with the heavy, steady pull of a big one but I was soon surprised with a hook pull. I know hook pulls happen but I am tempted to blame it on the larger hook.

I would be curious to know what size hook you use when hunting for specimen fish. And could you share what a “greedy pig rig” is?

    Thanks

    Dan

  2. Dan--The google satellite photo is old and does not do justice to the venue. In fact, that L-shaped farm building is no longer there. I think they just left a small grain bin structure for effect. The Harley Museum and Milwaukee have developed the area so that it is much more park like. We fish from just beyond the east side of the bridge at the bottom of the photo (north bank) east to the bend where the river/canal begins to turn north. That area now contains parking and park-like landscaping within a few steps from the pegs. You can't sit in your car to wait for bites, but it's very easy to transport your gear to the pegs (20 yards or so). Hope this helps. Larry H. and I will pre-fish it tomorrow (Wednesday). Come on up if you can.--Frank

Thanks so much Frank! This is a great description of the location. :) Your input in this forum is indispensable.

If I can rearrange my schedule for tomorrow, I will meet you guys there.

  3. Dan's (Slimy's) Mississippi River proposal is an intriguing one and elicits visions of an event I would definitely want to attend. However, it seems to fly in the face of a primary goal of the CCC; that is, to provide an opportunity to rub elbows with CAG leadership and to meet other CAG members from around the world. Fishing at sites along the Big Muddy would be fun for many of us, but it doesn't provide a centralized meeting place. Doesn't that make it just a glorified CAGI?

Tom B's/Tony's/Marcy's recent CCC event was obviously very successful and had all the elements of a traditionally successful CCC, except one. That exception was well presented in an interesting metaphor by Bruce Mitchell. 800+ were invited to the party and only 20-30 "friends" showed up. However, if those numbers could be increased over a bit of time and if a paylake or paylakes could accommodate 80-100 anglers with some provisions for a central location for meetings and get-togethers, then call me "on-board" for more southern hospitality.

Looking through a variety of lenses, I think Chicago still holds the most potential. From what I have learned from the "founders" of CAG and through my own experiences, the CCC is more than a fish-in or tournament. It allows members an opportunity to communicate (face to face) with one another and to enjoy the culture, attractions, and atmosphere of the host community. With no offense to the towns along the Mississippi or to those surrounding Midway II, it's tough to beat the draw of Chicago. The Windy City is much more centrally located and may not offer that terrific NC BBQ, but there are a couple decent restaurants around.

Of course, I realize that the lack of fish caught at the most recent CCC's in Chicago was another primary reason for the move to other locations. I had a brief discussion with Dr. Pezalla this morning, and we thought outloud about having one central meeting location and then having the fishing event at, perhaps, a variety of venues such as Montrose, Burnham, Jackson, and Diversey Harbors. That would alleviate the pressure on the fish and allow peg distances that are a bit more manageable. Or, perhaps, have a two day tournament and use the WI Carp Championships format. Have one set of anglers fish the harbors on day one with another set of carpers fishing the Chicago River at Ashland, Bryn Mawr, Kedzie, etc. on the same day. Then flip on day two.

I appreciate those who think outside the box, but I only hope that the original purpose of a CCC is not diminished by something too far-fetched. I'll certainly support whatever the final outcome may be--Frank

    Frank,

Way to bring the CCC back into perspective!

The Mississippi River suggestion was borne of the idea that the CCC should generate new memberships and monies for CAG. This suggestion could still be considered for exactly that, as a fund raiser, a membership drive, a national event, a CAGI or whatever…. I am sure there are others with ideas for generating needed funds and membership, and I hope the new leadership will fan the fire.

Bring the CCC back to Chicago!

    Dan

  4. Now that is a great idea for a CCC, The Mississippi River!!

Imagine the CCC the length of the Mississippi River. A venue in each state that borders the Mississippi River, held at the same time, on the same day.

State Chairs would have to work together to make something like this happen.

Can you imagine the publicity this would generate!!!

Hey Mario, how's that for thinking out of the box? :)

...but seriously, ten states border the Mississippi River; Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi and Louisiana.

A venue in each state would cut down the drive time for members in adjacent states raising participation.

A good promotion would bring awareness of CAG and carp fishing to the local fisher-persons and bait/tackle shops which could possibly bring in sponsorships.

    Lots of possibilities....

  5. South Dakota should definitly be a consideration in the future. I think a Discovery based yearly event is a really cool idea. Which in reality was what the ccc was this year. But if you really want the ccc to be the business end of CAG it should most definitly be in the easiest place for all to access. The mississippi River, tons of space....middle of the country.....As for the new adimnistration......Mark you still going to leave if I become president.......boy if there was ever an incentive to run......

  6. I present to you the 2010 CAG Carp King Matt Perdue. The winning Carp weighed 14.7 lbs.

    WTG Matt!!! :)

Beautiful trophy and bragging rights for life!

Congrats to Rodman for 2nd place! Did you also get a trophy?

Kudos to Mr. Big, carplady1, and the Midway gang for hosting the CCC.

… because most of us only know each other through the CAG website, could corresponding avatars/site names be mentioned? :D

  7. Just what do the initials CCC stand for?

I had thought it was an abbreviation for “Chicago Carp Classic”.

Or maybe it’s been changed to “Carolina Carp Classic”; or something else?

It would be silly to have a Carolina Carp Classic in Chicago. :)
