  1. Frank,

IMO you are being a bit too picky. This event was set up very well. The only complaint I have heard from others was the size of the fish.

    :)

The overnight fishing was an opportunity and part of the draw to this event. Overnight fishing gives participants an opportunity to seed an area and bring fish into their swim (European style). Otherwise you would be relying totally on the luck of the draw each day. Yes; end pegs are usually a factor in most tournaments (some more than others, i.e. Joliet), but in this tournament there were pegs in the center of the field that became competitive overnight.

The cost of the tournament at $100 per person, I also feel, is quite enough. There are other expenses involved that easily double that number; no need to add hotel rooms to that sum total.... Or if we were to camp, we might as well be fishing overnight. :D

  2. Kudos to Larry for a well organized event and for drawing out most of IL top anglers and others from Indiana! Thank you to Lee and Eric who volunteered their time and drove many hours from Wisconsin to help ensure the success of the event. :D

A beautiful venue with easy access set the stage for the 2010 Illinois Carp Championship.

Great weather; The breeze on Saturday kept the high temperature bearable and perfect weather that evening made staying by the rods that much easier (a coating of mosquito spray helped) .

Larry has been the most active Illinois State Chair I have known. CAG is fortunate to have someone of his caliber so active in promoting Carp angling to new comers (In the past year alone he has been promoting our sport on television, newspaper and radio shows). As if organizing one event wasn't enough, this past weekend included a second tournament below the dam for all new comers (who caught hundreds of pounds more fish than the veterans above the dam :) ).

Too bad the fish size didn’t live up to the tournament hype. I would guess that the average fish was 2LBS, the largest weighing in at 12+LBS. But nonetheless this made for a good contest among the participants (whom I dare to say are not used to catching fry :P ) who had to adjust to the fast current and fish size. It was challenging but we were all up against the same challenge.

My intentions were to take many many pictures but my camera froze up early the first day….

  3. Congratulations!! :D

    Beautiful fish!

Very special; there are many of us who have not hit that 30 Lb mark yet and sharing a day like that with your son is wonderful!

A day you and your son will always remember.

You may want to note that you posted this in the "Trading Post" section. A better place to have posted this might have been in the Regional Fishing Section or the Pictures, Stories and Video Section.

Non the less, Congrats and keep them pictures coming! :)

    Congratulations to all!!! :)

...just wondering, which teams are "paylakers"?

  5. My wife made a bet that my
would reach 500,000 unique viewers before my birthday. And she was right!

Last night, the magic cap was passed! Half a million! Incredible! Ah, if I had found a way to charge one buck a viewer! :)

    WTG! Excellent videos!!!

Not sure how my son does it, but links get posted on his website and he gets paid by the number of hits.

  6. I'm looking forward to hearing more about this tournament.

From what little updates there were, I knew Brid and Jason were in the running and I was hoping this would be the year; congrats on third place!

Congratulations to the Bates Brothers and Team Noddy Spode!!! :)

  7. I really enjoyed watching your recordings, especially because this showed the winter bite, the shy bites and the line bumps; this helps me relate to the different types of movement I have watched and wondered about on the rod tips.

Also very interesting how they use their pectoral fins.

    Great footage, thanks for sharing!!!

    :)

  8. You will find all FFF 2009 certificates below. Graphics are pretty big because I generated them in 150 dpi, for a good printing quality in case one of the winners would like to print it and insert in a frame.

Congratulations to those select few. :yourock:

There are many with good intentions, but few who act on them.

    Thank you much!!!

  9. Paul

    As an organisation?

Nothing at all in my opinion..........unless you can recruit a few thousand other CAG members in your State that share your concern.

    As an individual?

I'd write to your Representative or Senator........but don't expect them to put it top of their list right now given the other challenges they're dealing with.

    Iain

Paul has the right idea but maybe the wrong approach. He is right that an organization like CAG has a bigger voice than individual members, but talking about saving the common carp isn’t going to sway many opinions; suggestions that avoid reckless spending of tax payers money might.

Like I suggested in the Midwest post, was this poisoning the only option? Was it time for the "last resort"? Has someone just “wagged the dog”?

Nets that are miles long are used throughout the world to harvest the oceans. Certainly a custom net could have been built across this relatively narrow part of the canal to temporarily stop any fish from going up river while they do their maintenance on the electric barrier.

I am not an engineer so maybe this was already considered, but I just can’t imagine that a specially made net for the occasion wouldn’t work.

This net could be used every six months again and again. It would be a onetime cost to manufacture it. And I can’t imagine it costing 3 million dollars!

Suggesting alternatives to this massive poisoning might be a position that CAG could take.
