  1. Pat,

really nice fish!!! I'm "gagga" over these fish :D Want, no... need more of them!! Lets see what 2004 brings to the bank...

Have been doing a lot of reading on them... No questions now identifying between Big (large)mouth and Small mouth but the grey area for me is in distinguishing between the Smallmouth and the Black Buffs. This confusion is intensified because Smallmouth and Black Buffs often interbreed if they coexist in the same water such as Town.. so you have hybrids!!!

Need another week or so then I'll try to compare them all here to see if we can all nail this down once and for all! :D:D

    Cheers,

    Wayne

  2. For anyone who has ever visited Town lake, do you recognize one of its more famous reprobate method mix stealing inhabitants...

If not, may I introduce you to "Tyrone the Afro duck," the meanest and craftiest S.O.B. duck in Texas!!

He visited and stole from Okie's, Sean's and my peg.... Just had to get a photo, it was soooooooo funny!!! :D:D:D

  3. Brian,

thanks for the "Canyon Lake" location, its a lot closer to me than Austin! ;-)

Also thanks to Carpenbasstard for posting Brian's Buffalo....

Have tried to merge the two photos (quality isn't great) so we can see the differences...

The two Buffalo's look completely different to me... Body shape/head shape/eye and mouth position????

Creates more questions than answers for me... Are they both Small mouth Buffalo's?

Brian's looks more Carp like in shape to me???

Any one got any clues? Again, thanks for all the nice words of encouragement.... much appreciated!!!

    Cheers,

    Wayne

  4. Thanks for the kinds words guys....

I'm "hook, line and sinker" and head over heels in love with this fish.... Excellent quarry to fish for!!!! I know Buffalo's aren't related to Carp but in my book, they are the true native Carp of North America and as such deserve at least equal the respect we give to our beloved Carp!!

I plan on studying this fish and learning all there is to know during the next couple of years...

Hubbo, at the moment, I don't really know how far west the Buffalo inhabit. Would love to find a population out here in So. California, if anyone could help out with some local knowledge!!!!

I would be pleasantly surprized to find them up in Oregan, think the winters may be a little too cold? Could be wrong, again, does anyone out there know for sure? Or suggest a web site or two that may have info?

Alva D, I believe that the Buffalo and the Freshwater Drum are two completely different species...

Tony, did you pick any Buffalo up during your few weeks here this Autumn? Would love to know a couple of your secrets, come on mate spill the beans... ;-) :-)

    Cheers,

    Wayne

  5. Carpenbasstard, picture didn't show up agin mate! Would love to see it if you get to this thread again...

Newt, at last! :D been a while coming but I finally did it!! Did you or Todd pick any up last month?

The bites definitely seemed very Catfish like to me, no commitment by the fish to take the bait.... I eventually had to hit a nibble during a drop back! I'd left quite a few prior bites to see if they developed into a run but of course they didn't.... I think they just mouth the baits, sucking in, tasting and then blowing out so the swinger and alarm would just rise and fall, rise and fall...

So what I ended up doing was fishing a pop-up just enough to counter the wieght of the hook and lengthening my hook length to around a foot, loading a method feeder really heavy so I could really tighten down on the line. Once the fish picked up the hook bait and gained a little confidence it'd dislodge the method cage causing a drop back. I was literally sat on the rods waiting for any movement. It was magic!

    Cheers,

    Wayne

  6. Thanks Dave, hope its not too cold where you are and that you can still get out to fish...

Siamond, I've only seen pictures of them uptil this capture but this one looked fairly typical of the shape of this fish...

I've been waiting sometime for this capture and I wasn't disappointed.... Bufallo's rock!

    Cheers,

    Wayne

  7. Two days drive, arrival of the "cold front" Carp session assassin, three long days of hard work and finally 4 hours of great fishing... shortly followed by another two days drive!!!!

That was a summary of Sean & I's Thanksgiving week, we had some fantastic fishing company and some great laughs. Won't go in to too much more detail as he's doing an article on it for a well know mag...

But did want to share this picture of my 1st Bufallo of 27LB 6oz, what a great fish to catch and release!!!! I want more.... and BIGGER!!!!! :D

    Cheers,

    Wayne

ps sorry about the picture quality but we'd been having major problems with the flash/film speed on the camera and so we dicided to shine a flash light on the subject so at least we'd have an out line of the fish for personal gratification :D Of course the flash went off and here's what we got... I guess you live and learn! :D

  8. Brian and Crew,

Looks like a great time was had by all... Nice looking Carp!!

I have a good friend moving to the Pittsburgh area early next year and so I will be making a few trips out that way. If anyone is intersested in getting together to do some fishing, just drop me a line. Any tips on waters in that area?

I think Al K. is interested, will be a fantastic experience to fish with Al.

I've been to PA 5 or 6 times but never had the opportunity to fish, can't wait....

    Cheers,

    Soniq

  9. Hi Pat,

this was my first Grassy and it WAS going to be photographed! :-)

I was the one that was green, I had no idea what I was getting myself into here!!! and as you saw I got myself well and truely ###### slapped!! ;-)

I also caught a 28lb Grassy at 2 am the following night, I just played that guy until he was knackered... He behaved perfectly on the mat and then was returned to the water very happily with out incident...

All future Grass Carp will be unhooked in the water per your advice mate! :-)

    Cheers,

    Wayne

  10. Dave,

it works this end, maybe a parameter/pref on your box needs tweaking... its a ".mov" file so PC's and Mac's should be able to view. I'm away from my computer from tomorrow 'til 3rd Oct. If you still have trouble viewing I'll post it elsewhere.... Good luck.

Mike, I'd love to help out on that job.... Sure would be fun :D How long are they giving you to catch, move and release all the Carp?

Todd, Newt and a bunch of Virginia Carpers were on hand to help with the chorus of laughter...

    Rich, October it is!!!

    Cheers,

    soniq

  11. Hello All,

here is the video of me wrestling a Grass Carp that went absolutely crazy at Lake Orange during the Virginia fishin... I've edited it and squished it down as much as is possible without affecting the quality too much!

It really is funny, well worth the down load... It was... errr.... lets just say a learning experience... ;-) :-)

Post something here and let me know what you all think...

  12. Hello Mr. Manning,

Wayne Boon here, just a quick note to congratulate you on your new PB. Looks a lovely fish, bet it fought some didn't it!!

Would love to fish with both you and Sean someday in the not too distant future in one of your local waters... or over here in the States somewhere if you find your self this side of the pond at any time. Congratulations again!!!!

    Cheers,

    Wayne

ps please thank everyone involved in the Manning household for me Pickled Onions, they'll be just right around Christmas time. I'll be mailing a thank you note too!! Ta!

  13. Thanks guys for all your nice comments... We're going to try again this Sunday afternoon.

Hollywood and myself will be up at Clear lake a day or so b4 the fish-in starts but the kids don't finish school until the 27th June and couldn't travel up north until the Saturday.

I'm leaving the decision about whether they attend or not up to Rachel, my wife... as it'll be her who'll have all the schedule/travel headaches.

I appreciate your offer Keith, very cool of you indeed (as usual!)... Cheers!!!

Probably will not know for sure one way or 'tutha 'til a few days b4 departure and you'll have already left home to get the swims prepped. Lets keep in touch on this one...

I plan on getting Stephanie all her own kit b4 the end of the year for her 12th B/Day. Davey at 6 is happy at the moment sharing mine.

The full story to the "Photo session" is that I had a couple of hours on the lake the previous evening with Davey and pre-baited a couple of swims. Caught a nice Common of 20LB 10oz in the process. Pictured below.

Sean fished all the next day from daybreak and we joined him that afternoon and had all that sport. Sean pulled a lot of nice fish out in between heats of a day long powerboat competition on the lake!!

    Tight lines to all...

    Cheers,

    Soniq

  14. Steph with another low double and Davey's moment finally came with a magnificent 25LB 10oz Common. Hollywood and myself took turns holding onto Dave and the rod to stop him going Water Skiing!!! :D

A brilliant moment during a thoroughly fantastic afternoon....

    Cheers,
