  1. Sorry if this is in the wrong forum... I don't have my CAG membership (yet) because I am a broke college graduate. But I will soon! If the thread needs to be moved, please wait until next week (after I get some answers ),. I'd really appreciate that. :yourock:

Anyways... it's been between 55-65 usually at night latly here in southern New England. During the day we are capping out at about 75, but I am sure we will still get some nice bursts as it's still be VERY sunny here on the Rhode Island coast.

Should I be fishing at day break or sunset?

I really enjoy and would rather fish at day break than sunset, and because of how hot is was all summer I kind of got into a pattern of getting up early. Are my tactics still good? Like I said, getting up early just kind of fits into my day better. I enjoy getting up at 5, getting there for 5:30-6 and fishing until 8-8:30 and landing 1-2 (occassionally 3). BUT, if switching to sunset will help land me 2-3 and occassionaly 4, well then I guess I will have to do that. Especially since I am still new to the game and I've yet to get into anything sizeable yet.

I appreciate any and all input!!!

    first off welcome to CAG,

I also prefer daybreak but found no difference in the bite, but gotta tell ya 3 hours just is not enough time for fishing haha, at least 8 hrs is good, the bite usually starts for me around 7 or 8 and goes all day long, somedays better than others.

  2. I don't know the 'split rig' (which I first read as 'split ring', hence my confusion).

What is your intention, to mold the dough around the boilie, or to have both a boilie and a dough ball as hook bait? I would probably just mold a thin layer of dough around a smaller (10 or 12mm) boilie.

I have seen some put a bead on a hair to use for holding the dough ball as well. Just mold the dough around the bead to hold it onto the hair. On TFF someone (Zach, I think) suggested just molding the dough around some maize on the hair.

    Any of these would work.

On the other hand, I know some southern paylakers use a three-way swivel to have two hooks on, each with (possibly) a different bait.

    Any of these ideas help?

yeah I know zach, I believe he calls himself lonestar carper, I have heard about the bead method and that was what I was going to try, I appreciate your imput greatly, these forums are a great resource.

    thanks.

  3. Stephen, I don't understand what you are asking.

It sounds like you want to use boilies and doughbait together and want to know how to rig it?

Yes that is correct, I had mentioned it to someone else and they said I should try using a split hair rig, not sure how that works and the person did not give details.

  4. Hi all,

I'm new to CAG and thought I would say hello! I am a British ex-pat and have been living in Hong Kong for the last 15 years.

I have been fishing for Carp for 25 years now and fished many different types of waters in the UK.

I now Carp fish in HK, great looking site!

    Cheer's

how is the carp action in HK, my wife is from the new territories but is not into fishing, plan on visiting there for the first time and maybe i will bring some gear.

    Welcome to CAG

  5. not really it. It is just still too hot for a lot of people or people are just busy. I can't tell you how many times I tried to get people to fish with me and I went by myself most of the time. Right now seems like the Lake Worth guys are the most active.

did find someone but we are going catfishing instead, not what I wanted but at least I am getting out there

  6. Heading up for the first real trip this year. Planning on fishing the larry for a couple days as well as some local rivers near my families lake house. Fish to 30lbs have been caught right in the backyard and bigger fish have been seen cruising here as well. Plenty of room at the house if anyone is interested in stopping in for a couple days. Will be there from 8/30-9/9 Pm me for more details

    E

appreciate the invite but a little out of my way, good hunting

  7. try shortening the line between hook and the lead

I use long leaders for cats and fish which like to take the bait and go, but carp usually spit the bait right away so you have much better indication with short leaders 4-6 inches

a lot of people wouldn't use lead under 2oz I use running rig almost exclusively and think that extremely sharp hook is enough to prick the fish on initial take

which owner hook do you use?

I will try that thanks, my rods are light weight so I hope the heavier lead won,t be a problem, guess I could pull out the surf rods lol

not sure of the size or type of owner I am using , all I know that is is small, Owner are the only hooks I buy, find them much sharper than others I find at local academys

  8. I think most important part of any rig is super sharp hook

get some specialty carp hooks ( korda, nash, esp, fox...) or good fly hooks ( gamakatsu, owner, tiemco...)in size 6 or 8 and your catches will improve significantly, regular hooks just don't cut it in my opinion

for hook links I like 10-12lb fluorocarbon 6-8 inches, hair rig or sweatcorn/bread on the hook it shouldn't matter

    good luck

my current rig is just a #6 owner hood with a 1/2 oz slider weight with 2 foot leader, it works but I was hoping to get into something a little better.

  9. I am new to carping and I am looking for a very simple rig to improve my catch ratio, any simple rig would be fine, keep in mind I am a dummy to these kind of rigs so any extremely simple guidelines on a rig would be of great help.

  10. Welcome! Ask away, we like to help.

I am currently using the basic of the basic rigging to catch carp, my bait is a diugh bait formulated for catfish but the carp tear it up, I want to learn the euro method I hear about that everyone is using but the diagrams I see just make me confused, any help would be greatly appreciated, thanx

  11. Stephen -- welcome to the World of the best fighting fish you'll find (pound for pound) anywhere!! Forget the fancy rigs for now, -- just enjoy your new found challenge and use as simple a rigs as is possible. The complicated stuff isn't needed when starting out, and will just confuse things. Keep asking questions here about how to get going, -- and you won't go far wrong

    Tight Lines,

    Brid.

    thanks for the warm welcome

  12. for carp on the fly, Ray Roberts is the place to goto in the metroplex. As far as bait fishing any lake around here produces, some jus ta bit bigger than others. White Rock and Grapevine probably hold the biggesy fish in the immediate area

I have heard about the white rock carps, pretty bigguns in there, need to try myself sometime

  13. :yourock: Howdy from Texas,

I just wanted to be a part of the fun! Ya'll shouldn't want to keep it all to yourselves!

I am medically retired. I moved from the Texas Hill Country, Lake Buchanan, to the DFW

Metroplex. It's a great place to live, lot's of fishing places. I retired from the insurance

brokerage business. We needed to be closer to the kids and grandkids. I'm reasonably

close to trout fishing in SE Oklahoma. I love to Fly Fish and I also tye my own flies.

I'm sure you kind folks can give me some good advise.

hey fellow newbie, I also am from DFW, nice to have a close neighbor here
