  1. Doug Stange, In-Fisherman Editor has promoted carp fishing for many years. His "World's Greatest Sportfish" article and magazine cover jump started CAG and the modern carp fishing era.

"Carp Man" Dan Geigerich's promotion of carp fishing pre-dates the modern carp fishing era and the Internet. Anyone who was a hardcore carp fisherman back in the day was familiar was Dan. Dan has long been a go to person with regard to carp fishing information in North America.

  2. Sean there is always support for this. I did a fish in a few years back and had around 20-30 guys come to it. Bringing food is only an added bonus. I brought drinks for everyone since it was a hot day. Promoting the sport is always good and it also allows you to have a partnership with the local wardens because they appreciate when anglers do stuff like this. I am not sure who you ask now but cag gave me nacas and brochures for cag to hand out that were nicely recieved and I handed out every single one. Steve Lojek (sp?) used to be the former chair and basically its like what you do now but you are obligated to 2 fish ins a year. Its a good way to get guys fishing together and showing new guys as well.

I will help you in any way I can. Honestly I would love to be chair again now that I stepped down as president, but I want some new blood with a new perspective to get in the mix, so I have been holding off. If you go for it, I'll have your back in every way :)

  3. Nah, but it's better if there's less temp variation than it is with a big warm up. Carp biting during warm spells is a big self-fullfulling prophecy, that's when people go out.

A few days with highs in the low/mids 40's dropping down to low 30's at night (air temp) would be about perfect for me.

I used to have this article filed away, but I can't find it. It had some solidish research in it, about how a sudden 4 degree water temp change in either direction will trigger carp to feed. I understand what you are saying about the self fulfilling stuff... But I have found it to be true when the temp drops too... I primarily fish when I can before when it's comfortable. But it's best to give advice when people will actually take it :)

    You're a librarian... dig that sh.t up

  4. Thanks for stopping by and Welcome to the Carp Anglers Group Illinois section. This is where it all began, this is Carp Central. Birth place of the Carp Anglers Group and Home of the Chicago Carp Classic one of the Nations largest re-occuring carp fishing events. It is also home to one of the largest populations of avid carp fishermen in the U.S.. There are events that happen almost every weekend here.....summer and winter..... we are hard core, But a friendlier bunch you won't find anywhere else. Illinois has many active local carp clubs, carp leagues, carp derbies and more carp tackle shops than you may have ever imagined and with Chicago...it is truly a Carp Fishing Melting Pot. From Euro-style carp fishing, River Fishing, Match style fishing and even some pay-lakin', you'll find it here in Illinois, or very close by. Illinois State Chairs Bill Hodge, Paul Wells and Larry Kirchner would like to offer any help we can in getting you on the way to a fun and productive carp fishing experience and any thing we can do to help is here for the asking. From getting started to pro-level tournament experience you will find it here and we will do our best to help guide you every step of the way. The best part of being a CAG member in Illinois is that you will become part of a very big and loyal family. And as family you'll know that members, bait and tackle supporters and our friends here and in the surrounding states will do what we can to get the information you need and to welcome you in.

The Carp Anglers Group is a clearing house of all information carp, but more than that it is a group of like minded people who all enjoy fishing for carp for fun and the social aspect of a local fishing club. From guys getting together for a day out, to State socials known as "Fish-Ins", and National Events you will find almost everything here so if you have a question ask away. Once again the Carp Anglers Group and its Illinois chairs (Bill, Paul, and Larry) welcome you and wish you good luck......and "Ever better Carp Fishing".

    Hi Larry,

This is cool, but just in case you didn't notice, I put this text at the top of the broader IL section so it is always the first thing people see.

  5. so cold weather is setting in. The great fish we target is slowing down. I have set a personal goal of finding success this fall an winter. Up to this month, November, i have done just that. In past years i have went in to hibernation by now, but this year is different... I WILL catch a November an December carp, i will try an try threw my knowledge of the water an understanding of the fish to find myself my first winter carp. Till the lakes freeze over i am going to try. :)

Just watch the weather, and put bait in before any warm spells... then fish during them. If it's warm+rainy, that helps because the warm rain makes the water temp change faster :D

  6. When this thread first appeared, I couldn't think of anyone specifically that I would like to share the bank with for I would enjoy anyone's company in CAG and I already get to fish with one of the best carp anglers in the area (Alex V.) so I never posted on this thread until now.

I would like to fish with Dale Holmes :) for he seems like a straight shooter. He says it as it is and doesn't care what others think of him....age and experience does that to people...makes them wise and mature. I personally am a lot older than I look and now that I'm aging, I am becoming one mean son of a bit*h. I will be honest....as a human being, like everyone I have a fundamental desire of wanting people to like me but for the past 2 or 3 years, I've started to see the real world and how to some people, you just have to punch them in the face :D .....well I got kind of carried away there but I think I would enjoy Dale's company very much. I love reading his carp fishing adventures. :)

Dale is a great guy to spend time with. If you give him an invite, you might just get your wish. He travels to fish all over the US every year, but I can't remember reading about any trips to your area... It just might be on his list :P

  7. Here are some links that I find useful when researching locations/planning fishing trips.

    Tides:

    http://www.mobilegeographics.com:81/

Very helpful to know when fishing the Delaware and tidal Schulkill.

USGS Real-Time Water Data for Pennsylvania:

    http://waterdata.usgs.gov/pa/nwis/rt

You can click on different points on many water bodies to get all kinds of data- temperature, flow rate, turbidity, height, dissolved o2, etc etc... The data collected is different from place to place. I find flow rate helpful in choosing a swim after a rain.

    Advanced Hydrologic Prediction Service:

    http://water.weather.gov/ahps2/hydrograph....&gage=PADP1

This link goes to the Schuylkill, but there are a variety of rivers all over that you can check. Basically this is the predicted flow rate based on expected rainfall.

    US pressure systems weather map

    http://www.weather.com/maps/activity/aches...ther_large.html

If you look at this before going fishing, you can get a sense of how pressure systems affect the bite.

    Delaware River Salt Line locations:

    http://www.state.nj.us/drbc/salt.htm

It moves... and I wouldn't carp fish to far below it :)

Add more if you have more...

  8. That pic makes me want a hair cut :P

Good luck chris, please post your results! We all love hearing about Blackfoot. I hope you pioneer some new water too, we don't get enough stories from your state!

    Hello Chris,

Sorry for the delay, but replies like this from my iPhone are a bit too complicated for me. :D

First time on Blackfoot in '03

Can't believe its been 7+ years now since I visited this place. I even had short hair. :)

The one thing I remember most about the trip was the carp were on strawberrry boilies 4/5 to 1 over maize or anything else. Most fish we had were low 20's, I think we had 70 mirrors in 72 hours? I did also managed to get my ID 30 which was cool.

Several anglers have visited since then and may have more recent info than I have. Dale has done very well there so he would be the one to talk to in more detail.

This was one of those trips that keeps me addicted to exploring new places.

I think ID in general has loads of potential so good luck and enjoy. Be sure and keep us up to date on how you do.

  9. This new section will hold topics about local carping as the regional sections once did. This category will be geared towards local questions, making friends, casual conversations, and social events, while the regional sections in the members only area will be specifically for reports. It will continue to grow, so stay tuned :)

  10. the front page needs to be changed if the forums are private. if you click on a topic link that is members only you get an error message. a sure fire way to have NEW guests navigate away from the page

    Oh good call, thanks!!!

I need to build a new rss feed that excludes the regional sections. Didn't think of that!

  11. It was suggested on another forum that some of the BF crowd already signed up as CAG members to get full access. I think this is very likely to be true. You can draw your own conclusions here... :)

The issue with BF folks used to be a lot worse that it is now. They used to even list our events on their forum, just like we list them here, in a thread that encouraged their members to go shoot where our events were held the days leading up. I spent some time on their forum trying to tell them that not everyone in cag was out to get them, and we have more in common than either group really realizes. Some of them got it... at least they didn't ban me. It really all goes back to David trying to ban bowfishing all together on town lake back in the day when he was president. I think a lot of that has worn off by now, and most of it was just jockeying anyway. As far as I know, no bowfishers ever showed up and disrupted a fish in.

One time I do know of some shooters in Canada, Saskatchewan I think, who found a members baited area on this forum, shot a ton of fish, and actually threw them on the bank in his spot to be hurtful. This started as a great thread about a new spot a guy found, and had finally cracked.... it was a great story, pages long about some really nice fish... and one day he posted all these photos of 10-20 fish laying all over the bank, in this beautiful park like setting, rotting.

Anyway, I really doubt a lot of these guys are going to spend the time and money searching the members only area of our forum when they have just as good info on their own. I frankly see more of our members going to their sites to find big fish. The way they stalk them gets big fish results faster than our approach. If a handful of them did join here, it's not like they are going to read the entire forum and spread that info everywhere. They'll look at their local area, and in time, probably get bored with the long whimsical stories we like to tell. That is not their style.

There ARE a lot of members who worry about that though, so it backs the idea of making reports members only. I still think there is a better way out there to reach out to new members locally.

  12. Louis this is right out of the State Chair Handbook

Promote the carp vs. the CAG. Yes, we want to see the CAG grow, but as CAG members our primary goal is to gain a more popular view of the carp by the angling public. All anglers are not “club joiners”…those that are, will join once they see the benefits and get the urge. Those that don’t join will still have developed a more favorable view of the carp and know of the existence of the CAG and pass the word.

This is why I object to the change. This is a principle I have used as a state chair, and this is why I donate my time. Your change runs contrary to those befiefs as it retreates rather than engages the public.

Cool, I'm glad you read that. I have been trying to tell you that I agree with you on that principle. I'm not sure if you read all my posts about keeping a lot of the forum open... I just think there are other ways to reach that goal, while providing certain services to members. Consider it a trial. ok?

  13. Not trying to make you look bad Louis, but even you have to admit you have kind of kicked the hornets nest here......threads in three sections with thousands of views and hundreds of posts. Three years everything was fine, week before election you make a major change on your own........This is all you my friend, all I did posted my opinion.

I know it's your opinion. 3 years and everything was fine? You take shots like this every time anything happens. I'm just lucky you were not here for 100 similar discussions. It's all me? This was not my idea, I have heard it for years and decided to back it.

This is how it always goes when we make a change here:

People make suggestions, one is chosen to try. Some people support it loudly, some disagree loudly, they both argue, and the smart people wait to see what happens- Because they know you can always change back and the truth comes out in the wash. Ok, so if it doesn't work, big deal, we'll move it back. Do you really think it's bad that people are discussing, participating and paying attention? In case you did not notice the poll in the members section, most of the BY FAR seem to be for this....

You should have seen the discussion about B&T members. People still talk about it like it is some shady deal. The truth is today we have 13 b&t members and before this system was set up we had 6. There were no complaints from the members when I moved director voting to a place where the members could see.... but the Directors were not so convinced about it. I moved off topic discussion and Ideas Suggestions Feedback into members only too... Not everyone liked that but It made for a much more civil discussion in both realms. Not sure you remember, but when non members were allowed in off topic the old admin banned talking about politics, religion and bowfishing. People came here for all 3 reasons just to start arguments. These trolls could have cared less about carp fishing. It all took some getting used to, but it worked out for the best.

Did you ever think there was a better way to relate to locals than through regional reports? What about the chapters? What if that gets sorted out as forums in the public area? What if another solution comes to the top? The fact is, new guys have little to report. They have questions to ask. So hiding reports so members feel safer posting them makes some sense, while embracing new folks in another fashion would make sense too. What could that be though? I'm not sure... Would you care to make a suggestion instead of complaining about everything that ever happens? When people make suggestions constructively, they are often taken seriously. Try it man, seriously. I don't care for you much but I know a good idea when I hear it and I'd still support one if you put it forward.

I understand you are against the idea, but do you have to be so mean about it? Seriously, you are always mean.

  14. For those guests who are new I hope you will hang in there through the election...I would hope things will change to the better as soon as the election is over......If however you are listed as a guest and you have posted over 100 times....you are not a guest.....you are an unpaid member forcing others to fund your experience with CAG at the expence of those who do contribute. Normally I am very supportive of non-members and usually prefer their company but when I saw many who where complaining with hundreds or thousands of posts listed as guests, I was insulted ........

This part i totally disagree with. Guests are fine. Their positive posts are contributions to our community whether they pay or not. I said in another thread... The more guest we have, the more will become members. The more who stay long term, the more will become members. All the while they are a fun part of our party. So what if they don't join for 1000 posts, or 5 years, or never? If they are contributing positively to our little society, then great! We should thank them for that.
