  1. That entire section of the Rock (above and below Lake Koshkonong) has always produced some nice fish.  I haven't fished it in several years.  When I did, it was always near the outlet of the lake.  It's just a bit closer for me coming off the interstate.

  2. I finally progressed enough, after shoulder surgery, to get out for a short session this morning.  I covered all the proper bait makers with a mix of panko (GFS), sea salt (Shnucks), CS corn (Aldi), fruity peach (K-1), shrimp powder (Valli Produce), and 4-season corn (WCB). ;)  I wasn't sure what team hat or shirt to wear so I just slipped on my Polonia Carp Team sweatshirt for the first hour and took "Mr. Glock" along for a companion.  First fish of the day was a very rare (for these waters) partial mirror.  Eight commons and three suckers were also banked before my limited bait supply was exhausted. and the shoulder said "enough".  All of the fish were still pre-spawn.  Things are a bit different out at Rock Cut.  Many of the fish are already spawning.

For anyone interested in fishing this area of the Rock, there are a number of easy access points w/ large numbers of fish.  The size is not as large as some but I've had buffs over 30#.  If you fish an area w/o high people traffic, just be very aware of your surroundings!

  3. I had to call the help line for GFS but did find it available. It is listed under "Japanese bread crumbs" w/ item # 903463. (25# / $27.49) They show it not being stocked in the warehouse but can be ordered from the supplier w/ a time frame of 2 to 6 wks. I know for a fact that it was in their warehouse last year and I got it in a couple of days. They said they would call me when it arrives.

  4. I stopped at GFS this AM to order my seasonal supply of panko and was told they no longer carry it in anything larger than 3#. Does anyone have another source for something like a 25 or 50 pound bag?

  5. Final reminders for June 21 Summer Solstice Tournaments at Johnson-Sauk Trail State Park in Kewanee

    1. Be at the designated parking lot (see below) for 6:15 a.m. peg choice.

    johnson_sauk_trail.jpg

    2. Bring at least $40 in case the entry is $20 per tournament ($60-$40 payout for 1st and 2nd). If the majority votes for a $10 tournament fee, payout will be $50 winner-take-all. I'll be voting for the $20 fee per tournament, so at least three of you will need to vote for the $10 fee to make it happen.

    3. Some kind of boot or waterproof shoe may be needed for mushy ground due to recent rains, some insect repellent may be in order, and backleads may be helpful to deal with boaters.

    4. I'll have one scale, but another will be needed for whatever side of the lake I am not on.

    5. If someone wants to conduct a big fish pot, speak up at peg choice.

    6. Don't forget that afternoon peg choice will be made AFTER the a.m. results are finalized. Last place morning angler gets first afternoon peg choice and so on.

    7. Medals for the top three places in each tournament will be awarded.

    8. Big thanks to Larry Seeman for taking care of lunch. My assumption is that lunch will be held on whatever side of the lake Larry is pegged for the a.m. event.

    9. Tournament 1 is from 7 a.m. until noon. No chumming until 7 a.m. Tournament 2 is from 1 p.m. until 6 p.m. No chumming until 1 p.m.

    10. Don't forget nets, landing mats, and weigh slings.

    11. I anticipate 6 pegs from which to choose: three at the parking lot swim and three across the lake at the campground swim. That forces at least two anglers to be in the same general location to witness/weigh each other's fish. It also includes a wild-card peg for somebody who may wish to fish a previously unoccupied peg or who might want some distance between him and the next angler.

    Drive safely. See you tomorrow.--Frank

    I'll have a scale/sling/tripod w/ me.

  6. Only caught two catfish all day. But, that's what happens when Dale isn't around to run interference. The wind died after dark but the radar showed a bunch of rain moving in around midnight. I'll take the cold or the rain but not both. Packed everything up while it was still dry and drove home. Lack of a tent made the choice easy. I'm still wondering how Bill's son managed to survive in a hamock!!

  7. If Bill hadn't tried to erect a two story "canopy" that needed a building permit, we would still be allowed to have tents!! LOL As for the "no overnight fishing"....I fished it a number of nights this summer and met a pretty hardcore group of locals that fish on a regular basis at night. FYI...you'll get over the lions roaring at night!!

  8. After being a steward for a couple of years, I wanted to fish this year's event. I opted to fish on Saturday and steward on Sunday. I had the fun of fishing next to Elli and her grandfather and Dale Anderson a bit further upstream. Watching Elli fight and land every one of her fish, by herself, is exactly why this is such a great event. Dale spent a lot of time teaching Carping 101 to a newbie for the entire time. I really didn't miss fishing on Sunday. Just roaming the bank to weigh fish and talk w/ the participants was as much fun. Looking forward to next year.

  9. My experience w/ Miller has been no problem w/ the police. It's comforting to have them patroling the park during the night. There was quite a bit of foot traffic through the park, all night long. In general, bivies are allowed but tents have caused one park official to tell us...."no overnight camping". Of course this was after Hodge had erected a two story building on the beach w/o a permit!! LOL If you fish the area that has been mentioned, you're within 50' of your vehicle. FYI...my last trip was without the aid of pre-baiting. My thoughts are that you can over-bait the area.

  10. I stuck around till Sunday. Landed a couple more cats then a common at 19lbs even on a 16mil WCB 4 seasons balanced with a neon fruit and strawberry pop up. What made the catch special is it broke my Blank streak! Anyone who has fished miller knows she does give up fish easily!

WTG Glad you stuck it out and got one. I've had a couple of those sessions on Miller w/ very few fish. Those fish just had to grab some of those "purdy" baits you were throwing. Good thing Boo didn't eat all of them!! BTW..thanks for the info on Grahame. I've PM'd him and hope to share some bank time.

  11. Cory...I left that pier spot just for you and even told Zach that you'd want to fish there. This late spawn/high water might have been a much greater factor than we realized. Those grassies may have just been staged there for a run up the "creek" ??? I do plan to target them on my next trip but suspect they'l be more scattered. But, who knew they were that large in L. Miller ???? BTW...nice job w/ the camera. You must have studied under Pawel or Teo..LOL

  12. With all of my local waters at or near flood stage, I drove to Bloomington, Il for a session with some fellow CAG's. I met up with Zach Testa, Cory Bohman and his son Boo. Things were a bit slow during the day on Friday, but that's the way Miller can be. Nice sunny weather with only a few clouds....until I started cooking our evening meal. Oh well, 30 minutes of rain is nothing compared to what we've been seeing. I managed my best Dale Anderson impression and caught a few catfish but no carp. One of the locals stopped to chat and mentioned the fish had been spawning only a few days ago. I really thought it was too late, by over a month, and dismissed the report. After the first carp was caught with milk flowing, my opinion changed. Right after dark I nailed a really nice 33-8 grass carp. We had no idea they were this size on Miller. In fact, I'd never caught a grassie on this pond. Any thoughts of sleeping left my thought process. I spent the night working my baits and keeping up with the chum. All while listening to the snoring from the rest of the group. Around 3Am I had another strong run and fought a much larger grassie all the way to the net. Rather than wake our "sleeping beauties", I tried to net it myself. Let's say that wasn't a great idea. I did manage to bank another 28-4 grassie later the next morning and a few commons up to 21-4. The real award goes to Zach. After the tough battle, my 33-8 grassie started to fade, when released. Zach jumped in the lake twice to help revive the fish. To his credit, that fish is still making wakes on L. Miller. With another round of storms moving into the area, I bailed and headed back to Rockford by mid morning. As for the normal round of plugs for various bait companies....the fish fell to a snowman bait of K-1 fruiti peach soluble boilie and a WCB popup pineapple boilie. There may have even been some Wacker Bait & Tackle flavoring in the method mix! LOL Some days....it's all GOOD!!

  13. Teo joined me for a 24 hr session on the Rock River in downtown Rockford. Only 3 fish between noon on Friday and 1A on Saturday. But....then it started. Numerous fish that kept the alarms going and a couple of doubles. We had to take shelter from the lightning between 4A and 6A but at least we got a couple of hours of sleep.......one of us a lot more than the other!!! We resumed the session after the lightning cleared and the fishing was still very good until we quit at noon. the largest common was 16-10 but a nice 26# buffalo gave my lightweight Predator rod all it could handle. Great session, great company, and very good pizza!!
