  1. Adam Holodok with total of 104 lbs 2 oz was a winner in 2nd round of Midwest Winter Carp League 2010-2011 for group A today. He also caught the biggest carp of the day 26 lbs 10 oz !!! Second place for Mike Olinger with total of 85 lbs 7 oz, third place for Andy Burnagiel with total of 59 lbs 11 oz, behind Andy was Tracy Jourdan with total of 11 lbs 3 oz, fifth place for Larry Hemmens with no fish today.

Actually, I did take a nice fat fish......at 3:02P....when I was pulling my lines! LOL

  2. Larry Hemmens checking in from Rockford, Il. I'm a bit removed from the Chicagoland carp waters and new to the hardcore carping world. For years I was a multi-species angler that targeted prime waters at prime times for selected species. As a member of the Rock Valley Anglers and Walleye Unlimited, Inc, my travels included the entire Great Lakes region. I had a difficult time trying to fit my love for cycling and fishing into my work schedule. After 40 years with the telephone company, I retired. Now, it's a struggle to find time for cycling.

My time with the Rock Valley Anglers gave me my first carp tournament experience. I started holding an annual Rock River "tuna" tournament that gave extra points to members that brought kids or wives along to fish. My interest grew as I fished a number of local tournaments. Once I found a few on-line sites for information, I was hooked on the Euro-style and went completely over to the "dark side". I sold my boat and started equipping for my new found passion.

I now fish year round for carp and try to get out almost every day. Things slow down a bit due to a lack of a warm water venue in Rockford. At least I have the Winter League in Milwaukee to further my education. I've met and fished with a lot of very experienced carp anglers and gained many new friends. I always try to pick something up from all of them and give it a fair try. I relate back to my wife asking why I needed "all that gear". I just told her that a carpenter doesn't just have one hammer and one saw!

I hope to meet many more of you and will always be available to showcase the fine carping around the Rockford area.

  3. We have not heard from Sam Snow about whether or not there will be an annual MCAA Thanksgiving Carp Challenge in Joliet. If he does not host that event, we, in the Joliet area, will host a carp tournament on Saturday, November 27 from 8 a.m until 4 p.m. on the Desplaines River in Joliet, IL. Pegs will be distributed throughout the area, so you will not be bunched on the south side of Bicentennial Park. To help us plan for peg placement, we would like to have participants indicate here or in the Midwest section their plans to attend. Thank you.

There will be a $20 entry fee and an optional $10 side pot for big fish. 100% return of entries will go to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place total weight winners. More information will be posted on the "Illinois Carp Fishing NEWS" website in the next few days.

    Participants so far:

    Cory Bohmann

    Dennis Davis

    Mike Olinger

    Frank Rink

  4. WOW...what a great day for fishing. Incredible weather to kick off the Winter League. Big Fish was quite a battle today. I had an early 16-8 that was looking real good until Tracy hauled in a larger 18-2. About 30 minutes from the end, a lady stopped to chat and asked how you could tell when a fish bit. I pointed to the pod to show her the alarms and had a run. It was a large fish that hook pulled half way to shore. I re-baited and threw back in the same spot. Ten minutes later I landed the 18-12 to take big fish. The carp gods were smiling on me today!

It was great to see some of the other contestants visiting us today. I know they have their fingers crossed for the same kind of weather, when their turn comes. Looks like Ernie will be doing more filming for the following groups. Be sure to smile for the camera. WCB products produced again today. I can't wait to fish the next round. This winter is going to be fun. I can't imagine storing all the gear and waiting for spring.

  5. I joined a retiree group from the local YMCA this summer to fish their local monthly tournaments. The first time I showed up with all my gear, I nearly blew their minds. Nobody had ever seen gear like that and they couldn't figure out how I caught all those carp and still was able to walk the bank and chat with everyone. I did a small presentation at our luncheon to simplify some basics on rigs, bait, and tactics. I got a lot of interested folks that all wanted to come fish with me. I took a gentleman that was in his 80's out to our local state park and set him up with two rods. My job for the morning was to keep him baited, net his fish, and recast the 12' rods for him. He did all the rest and nailed 28 fish between 6 and 12 pounds. He was smiling and hollering the entire time. He told me it was the best day of fishing that he'd ever had in his life. I never wet a line but had more fun than he did. I later made a print of this picture and presented it to him at the next luncheon. I'm betting he's still showing it off at his hi-rise.

  6. Tom,

Thanks for posting the pics. It's nice to see what this paylake facility is like. Sure wish we had something like this in northern Illinois. It would make a dandy lighted ice rink for 3 or 4 months of the year!! LOL

  7. For anyone interested in those St. Croix Avid Carp Rods that Lee was showcasing this past weekend, I checked with the St. Croix reps in Park Falls, WI, and they indicated that the rods should be available by early October. However, I think you may be able to make orders at St. Croix retailers now.

At the peg draw, Lee Young mentioned a 12 & 1/2 foot version may also be coming out this fall. He may have been taking some orders for the 12 footers last weekend. If the local retailers don't have the info, check with Lee.

  8. Hello fellow carpers, Tracy here. Thanks Larry for for running a fairly tight ship. An awful lot for 1 person to cover. Beautiful venue, access to bathrooms, and being to camp right at the bankside was both good and bad. The reason I haven't posted sooner was getting over the bank surfing. What that is: At 1 and 4am the alarm goes off and your half asleep fumbling with your flashlight heading out the tent. I practiced it many times in the light(3 steps to the edge, 2 steps down to the pod). When your half asleep and miss count(1st) or miss the steps all together, you go down the bank WAY faster than your ready. Once down the bank on the right side and once on the left. I'm moving better today and nothing broken. :D:):P The fishing was like a very looooong matchfishing contest. Small everything with a heavy weight is hard to balance. 3 onces held out so far and 4 onces abit father and so on. The fish were further out in the light and closer at night. We just couldn't land that special kicker fish. I know we had one on several times but couldn't get it to the bank. I enjoyed myself(little sore) but think I could do that again. BTW, need trash cans, didn't see a one. later

Sure hope you survived. Man, do I feel bad for you guys having to keep running down the bank for alarms! If you had asked, we would have traded pegs with you and you could have slept all night without all that noise!! LOL You could have also taken some of Paul S. "medication" and you wouldn't have remembered the surfing.

  9. We made all kinds of "smaller fish" adjustments and used every flavor of pips on tiny hooks, all to no avail. I should have made some skypod adjustments to address the heavy current, but, alas, I couldn't take my skypod to the tournament because the bag for it fell apart and my trusted carp bait and tackle shop hasn't even ordered a new one yet. Yeah, that's it. Blame the blank session on the lack of a skypod bag. :)

You didn't need the Skypod to fish 20 meters from the bank! LOL

  10. I suspect this forum guest is rather new to the site and hasn't fished with any CAG members. Likely has no idea what a "mat" is or how to use it. Sure hope he returns after those blasts !!

I had heard about those fish from our state chair. There are several very interesting species in the Rock River at Dixon.
