  1. Rock River report....with a couple of river tournaments on the horizon, I pulled off my gravel pits and local lakes to start hitting the Rock. Until last week, it's been a bit high & muddy. I fished it most of last week, the weekend, and again this morning. I took 12 fish (11 common & 1 buffalo) today. The numbers have been quite good all week but the size hasn't been anything for bragging rights. Largest this morning was a bit over 14#. All of the fishing has been on various City of Rockford public access spots but I hope to work down to Dixon in the next week or two. Got to get those hogs trained for the Dixon tournament if we're going to stand a chance against all the heavyweight competition!!

  2. A local gravel pit was recently opened to the public. I fished it for a couple of hours on Saturday and took a 20-8. Went back this morning and did a bit of marking to find a shallow point. Nailed 8 fish from 17-0 to 24-4 and four bonus channel cats between 6 & 8 pounds. It's some of the cleanest looking water I've ever fished.

  3. I have a local 400A lake that I fish 3 to 4 times a week. This year, the spawn started about 5/20/10. The fish were spawning on all parts of the lake. I fished about 30 minutes without a bite, chalked it up to the spawn and left. I avoided the lake until 5/30/10. I hoped the fishing was back to normal and thought I'd try again. I setup on one of my favorite spots but noted a lot of fish still thrashing and splashing along the shoreline. After laying out a good chum pattern and setting two rods, I waited 30 minutes for the first run. Once they started, it was non-stop for almost three hours. All of the fish were in the 8-12 pound range and looked to be males that had finished spawning. They were a bit beat up but definitely hungry. Several times I had other fish follow them right up to the shore while I did my netting. I'm starting to re-think my choice to avoid the lake for 10 days and wonder when the females will start to recover. Can anyone give me a bit of info on the sequence/timing of the spawn cycle and how it affects the bite.....under "normal" conditions??

  4. Great pics and very fine narrative. Again...I say you guys were insane. No way would I fish those conditions. BTW..it's supposed to hit 78 degrees here this afternoon. I may never come back to the midwest. Even my son's dog (Lambeau) is snoozing in the shade.

  5. Glad to have you aboard.

Thanks Larry. Thought I'd get a chance to chat with you at the Thanksgiving Challenge but didn't see you listed. Sam was talking about a possible event at Rock Cut for an overnighter. I gave him the info for the park superintendent. I s/w him at the park about holding something and he thought it might be possible before or after they go to summer hours. We also have over a mile of Rock River shoreline that could host the same function.

  6. I just returned to fishing this summer after a long departure for cycling. I just wasn't able to fit fishing, cycling, and work into my schedule. So, I retired! I met a UK transplant on the river one morning while cycling. Right after that, I dusted off some of my fishing equipment and started chasing carp about 5 or 6 days per week...until the weather got cold. It's been a slow process to add equipment and learn these new methods for carp. I've managed to catch several 20+ this year and a PB of 23-2. I had a chance to meet several members at a recent tournament and hope to meet a lot more of you in the future as I try to pick up even more info and tips. I hope to spend some time in Packer land next year and explore a number of spots from Milwaukee to Door Co.
