  1. Brian & Zach, I thought there were remarkable similarities between your situation, your thought process and your approach and those of Al & I. Seems like the big difference might have been that we hit the successful stategy a little sooner and so got a few more fish. You guys didn't have much of a problem with catfish and snags? They were major factors for us.

The only photo I have is one of Al's first and largest fish (20-4). Will post it tomorrow. Sean/Wayne should have photos of the mirrors, perhaps we will get to see them once they get back to CA.

  2. Go Brian and Mark!

Looks like you are batting 50% Scott. Who in their right mind would back Brian & Mark or Brian & Zack when they are up against Al & Paul? :D

  3. I thought I knew Al St. Cyr before I convinced him to join Wacker Bait & Tackle. I knew he was a hard-core, dedicated carp angler with an outstanding history. But I did not really know what OBSESSED was until I spent 3 days on the bank and two days in a car with him. I have fished with a lot of serious anglers but he is orders of magnitude beyond anyone else. His gear was in perfect order for three days of fishing but he did not bring any food or water, that sort of stuff is of no importance to him, only the fish count.

We did do fairly well after a slow start. When the boat dropped us off at our swim, my heart dropped. It looked awful, nearly unfishable I thought. Most of the lake was clear but this end looked like chocolate milk, visibility throught the water could not have been more than a couple of inches. Water was high and we had significant weed growth almost everywhere in front of us. It looked as if landing fish would be a big problem if we did manage to hook any.

Al hooked into a good fish the first night but it quickly hit a snag and was locked up tight. He was able to wade a considerable distance to get on the other side of the fish and eventually freed it. We were both out in nearly waist deep water and finally got the fish in the net. 20-4, not a bad start and it gave us some confidence.

A long dead spell followed that first fish. Lots of catfish but no carp. We then found a small openning in the margin weeds, a spot maybe 10' x 10'. I tossed in some particles and a rod rigged with a method feeder. In the course of the second night, I took 3 fish out of that spot followed by two more the next moning. In the mean time. Al had been hooking good sized fish but losing them in the snags (which appeared to be everywhere). Our chances to rack up pounds with 20-30 lb fish seemed remote, there was just no way to get them on the bank. We then consentrated on the margin fish even though they were smaller, at least we could land them. A bit of fine tuning on the bait enabled us to reduce the catfish takes to a reasonable number.

We ended up with 14 fish, 168 lbs 14 oz as I recall. Most caught on particles (maize, tiger nuts, maple peas and Canadian trappers) fished over maize/hemp seed/maples/trappers and method balls. I used Buckeye Blend and plain Mielie Bomb mixed with cream style corn and condensed milk.

ACS (David, Sean and Wayne) did a great job. They are top-notch professionals at organizing this sort of thing.

  4. The always delightful Alice is retiring from the bait & tackle business to pursue a career in acting. She is leaving for France soon after the CCC. We could not ask for a better Vice President of Domestic Operations and will miss her.

If you want to place an order with someone who is actually polite on the phone, you better call in the next day or two, before she leaves.

  5. It has been a long wait (the boat left South Africa in early June) but I have finally received a shipment of South African baits. Have the pips (whole corn kernels, in glass jar - keep forever) in 7 flavors (almond, bunspice, pineapple, reel run, vaaldam, tutti frutti, strawberry), mutis (dips) in 7 flavors (almond, bunspice, pineapple, raspberry, vaaldam, tutti frutti, strawberry) and mielie bom (method mix in four flavors (plain, vaaldam, strawberry, banana).
