  1. Paul England and I only photographed one fish - the 30-0 shown. In the foreground you will see a 20-8 caught at the same time. We had 4 fish (92 lbs) in 10 minutes. Quite possibly the most exciting fishing episode of my life.

We were fortunate to fish next to the famous Kirkman brothers on day one and the Smith couple on day two. Great neighbors in both cases. I admire the patience of the Kirkmans for putting up with the horrendous dog owner problem. My thanks to Tracy for letting me weigh and photograph his lovely 34-4.

  2. Rod, what I really want to do is throw a bunch of verbal abuse in your direction but I guess that is best done face-to-face. :D

Congrats on some good angling. Paul and I knew we were in big trouble when we heard you drew that peg. Trying to bribe Paul for info was low, however.

  3. Lake Minnetonka has a good population of carp well into the twenties but it is very difficult to find bank access. However, there is a bike/jogging path along the shore running north from Excelsior. If you take Minnetonka Blvd north from Excelsior to Lake William (a small puddle on the right side of the road, a mile or two from Excelsior) you should be able to find a place to park and to get onto the trail. Once on the trail, you should be able to find a place ot fish and sight fishing should be possible - depending on wind/season/etc.

  4. Wacker Bait & Tackle, LLC has a new look to the web site and a bunch of new products.

New alarms from Fox and Delkim

Fox Pellet Master 12' 4.75 lb rod (designed for Wels catfish, good for monster flatheads, sturgeon and carp)

Fox Euro Warrior XT 12' 2.75 lb, ultra slim blank, great fish playing action and full cork handle

Lots of pole fishing bits & pieces

Take a look around and let me know what you think.

  5. CAG Hotels:

Quality Inn Chicago - gutted and renamed. They would not return my phone calls when I tried to get rooms in the renovated hotel.

    Wesley Inn - demolished

    Big Purple - demolished

Any others that we have cursed?

  7. As Scott said, Lada was a "bit" out there, actual he was waaaay out there and, of course, in a very good way. Every time I saw him, the first words out of his mouth were "Paul, let's go fishing!" (I wish I could write it in his accent). Day or night, rain or shine, freezing cold or baking heat - it didn't matter, he was always ready to go.

He was a very good angler: placed third in the last Tournament of Champions, caught the 57+ buffalo that is swimming in the tank at the Texas Cabela's, did a little match fishing in the Chicago area and did well, and pulled some of the best fish out of the Chicago area waters. He was competitive, if he fished a tournament, he was there to win. Despite this he seemed to have no secrets - he gave me dozens of "top secret" baits and always shared the new fishing venues that he found.

He was a self-employed tradesman, mainly doing bathroom remodeling as well as whatever other jobs came his way. Shortly after I met him. my wife and I were looking for someone to redo our bathroom. My wife had spent countless hours seeking out highly qualified individuals with sterling recommendations. I asked Lada if he could do it and if he was any good. He said "trust me". Even though I barely knew the guy and had never seen his work, that was enough for me. I told my wife that I had found someone to do the job and she asked how I knew he was any good. I said because he told me he was. There was no way anyone would doubt his word - he said it would be good and it was.

He was alone in this country, his father and sister are in the Czech Republic and he did not have a wife or regular girl friend over here. I last fished with him Thursday morning and he told me that fishing was the only thing that he lived for but that was going to change soon. He was reconnecting with an old girl friend back home. It was clear from the conversation that they were truly committed to each other and he was planning to move back and start a family (he was only 45). I had never seem him happier and it was a great morning of angling though we both blanked.

  8. Yeah, Jerome, thanks for the review of a book you haven't seen. :D

But seriously, you do make a good point, just not a valid one in this case. I have printed out the ebook and have made a good start on reading it (but I keep getting sidetracked by other little projects). I am not the one to review the book but I am finding it very useful, well written and cohesive. It is not just a haphazard collection of stuff thrown together.

I am willing to offer a $20 store credit to someone if they will buy the book, read it in its entirety and give an honest review.

I have also read the one from Missouri Bait Works and agree that it is well worth the money - highly recommended.
