  1. Thanks to all for the vote of confidence.  It all started in October, 2012 with an invitation by Willem to come up to Kingston and fish with him and his son.  Three carp were my first official carp and it's been an interest since then.  I hope to bring an awareness of what carp fishing is all about.  Nothing like landing and releasing a double digit fish to grow and be caught again!

  2. Snow?  Freezing temperatures? Wind chill?  And you have a bunch signed up for this?  Oh, well, let the games begin!  Good luck to all participants.  I do wish we have a venue like yours as many places here in TN aren't conducive (like the big word?) to having a fish-in.  We have a few places but need some young guys who are adept at climbing rip-rap.

  3. Sign me up!  Participation will depend on the weather as it can be good or lousy here in east Tennessee.  I have seen it unseasonably warm or very cold with wind, rain, ice, or snow or all three.  Or I might be heading south to north Georgia and fishing with carpers there.  Will wait and see how the weather turns out.

  4. There should be some that would teach you the finer points of carping.  Go to the Beginner section of the website and start there.  Keep in mind, many of us have adopted the Euro style of carping with the long rods and alarms, etc. but you can start with basic tackle for bass fishing.

Whoever "guides" you will be a volunteer, I would think.  Here in TN, if you guide for $$, you have to have a special license.  Also, look at the calendar of events and see what fish-ins are in your area or within driving distance.  Welcome to the wonderful world of carping!

BTW, I would recommend you consider a membership.

  5. Saw a head mount of an alligator gar in a place in Shreveport.  Over six feet long and about 100 pounds.  That's a lot of fish.  BTW, Jeremy Wade, River Monsters, fished with a guide on the Trinity River in Texas.  It was a river but looked like a muddy ditch but had big gar.

  6. Not familiar with carping waters as I haven't lived in Ohio for many years.  Should be some good carping just about anywhere.  Get a map and start looking.

While there, check out the Amish community.  Holmes County has one of the largest populations of Amish in the country.

Off topic but interesting trivia.  Back in the early 50s, Smithville was known for their speed trap.  They cut you no slack whatsoever.  If you were clocked at one MPH over the posted limit, you were given a ticket.  The town saved up the money from the fines and used it to build a new high school.

  7. Interesting video, MOCarp.  However, I would have lots of questions about the video.

    1.  Was it the rig itself?

    2. Was there some repellent scent on the rig as sunscreen, etc.

    2. Was the flavor, if any, indicative of being caught in the past?  Bass have been shown to be conditioned to certain lures.  That is why bass anglers have hundreds of dollars invested in artificial baits.

To me, there are many variables here.  Like casting to a bass 25 times and getting a strike on the 26th cast.  Why that one cast?

One thing would have been to have everything identical except for one hair rig and one with the bait on the hook.

  8. Bait stops?  I use short pieces of rubber bands.  I can make about 8-10 from one rubber band, depending how precise I am with the scissors.  I cut at an angle so I have a point to insert into the hair loop.  There are some great tutorials on the forum and on youtube for tying hair rigs.  My friend needmotime2fish shared his method- quick and hold up great.
