  1. It's not a crucian Jerome. The stretch of river the fish came from has a ton of wild goldfish and these have hybridized with the carp. I have caught several over the last 4-5 years. They top out in weight around 7-8lb's. Couple of photo's below of goldfish and the hybrids, from the same stretch of river.

  2. Mario,

I'm happy to do 3 online and 1 printed. It really makes no difference to me as the work load is pretty much the same. I'm unsure as to sponsors and if they are available to finance an edition in the near future? I am not in the loop regarding finances and from my initial conversations I was under the impression that the BOD did not want to spend money on NACA ie. they want it to be self funding.

I could hold off on Q4 and gather content for a printed edition (64 pages??). This could be done over the next couple of months and I can then put out 2015 Q1 in March, Q2 in June, Q3 in September and the printed Edition around Christmas time each year?

Let me know what everyone thinks.

    Dean

  3. Mario,

My goal is to put out 4 NACA quarterly's each year via the online Magazine and 1 Special Edition (Printed) each year. I believe Andy has a better deal for more pages at the same cost. My main concern would be that printed magazine is of a high quality and the content is outstanding and not just stuff we throw together. I would like it to have a Theme and something which the members can keep and re-read with useful information.

Not sure when we want to aim for but I would think a summer 2015 release would be ideal. I would like to try and stick to the following timeline next year for the online version:

    Q1 - March 1st

    Q2 - June 1st

    Q3 - September 1st

    Q4 - November 1st

We could aim to put the printed version at any point in between. I am happy to gather all the content as usual and edit the magazine, just let me know what the general consensus is.

  4. In the last edition I did not have enough time to pull together the 'Ask the Specialist's' Section, but I will be returning to the questions posed in future editions. Thanks for all the comments.

Q4 will focus on the winter and how to get the best out of your fishing. I am recruiting winter specialists as we speak, but I would like the members to list a few questions that we can pose to be answered.

Please use this thread to pose a question relating to the winter. It could relate to weather, water conditions, locations, bait, tactics or anything else that is relevant. We will pick the best 1 or 2 questions to be answered.

Thanks in advance for your contributions.

  5. Now that NACA Q3 is live and available for viewing I can concentrate on the next edition!

Thanks for all the comments regarding Q3, I hope everyone enjoys it and hopefully it's only the start. As you will have noticed we are including lots of CAG news and content and with this in mind I would like to ask members to keep on submitting articles, catch pictures and scenic shots.

The theme for Q4 will be 'Winter Tactics and Approaches' so please send in any interesting winter pictures, scenic shots or articles for consideration. You can send all pictures and articles to:

    naca@carpanglersgroup.com

I already have one excellent member article so please keep them coming.

    Thanks,

    Dean

  6. Just a quick clarification question, is this years event just for Friday 27th and Saturday 28th February 2015 ?
Didn't it used to be a Fri evening, Sat/Sun event ? with the corn boil being the Fri night ?
Or was this meant to be posted as 27th, 28th Feb , and 1st Mar ?
Sorry to ask but as I am hoping to come down for this one, from Colorado with my Team CarpQuest. It's very important I have the dates right, for my partner and I to plan accordingly to see if we can make this fun event !
    Kind Regards,
    John

John, Fishing is usually Friday and Saturday with the corn boil on Thursday evening.

  7. Another quality issue!

Enjoyed/learned from all of the articles, particularly Frank's, Brian's, and Ian's. I had read Dean's before and it is still just as good! ;-)

    Well done!

Thanks, I included the boilie article as the last 2 sections are unpublished and I wanted to save them for NACA. They wouldn't have made sense without first publishing the first segment. Glad you like the other articles.

  8. A few days earlier than advertised, the NACA Q3 is now available for viewing or download.

Here's a link if you can't find it:

    http://www.carpanglersgroup.com/forum/index.php?/forum/322-naca-2014-q3/

We have lots of CAG Club News, Members contributions and specific articles on fall fishing and feeding approaches. Hopefully, there's something interesting for all of you. This is just the start as we have several other new sections coming in future editions.

    ENJOY :)

  9. Great fish and pics! Do you keep baiting the area between sessions?

Thanks, no pre-baiting as the distance away from the areas does not make it feasible. Also, I am targeting the bigger fish and in my experience pre-baiting brings in the smaller fish in these areas, unless you have time to sit on the banks and keep bait going in consistently. I can only fish short 8-10 hour night sessions, so I bait accordingly. The key to my captures is knowing where the fish are most likely to be depending on the conditions and water temperatures at this time of year. Rigs and bait can be fairly simple if you get the location correct.

  10. Over the last month I have continued to fish opportunistic short sessions after work. There is usually a few hundred miles travel involved but I'm a firm believer in chasing your targets and putting in the work as results tend to be more rewarding.

There are many, many other local waters I could fish and if I had plenty of time I would make use of these resources. However, with only limited time I have chosen to fish harder areas (harder in that I cannot sit and wait for a few days for the fish to show up or feed) where the fish sometimes do not cooperate! I will say though, once I have rods in place the buzz I get knowing that the next beep could lead to a dream fish is what makes it worthwhile.

My last post left you in mid September where I had caught a few nice fish, topped by a 35lb mirror. In the last month I have managed to fish for 5 nights (with 3 of them together). The mild temperatures have meant the fish have not been as active or hungry, due to natural food still being prevalent, but I've still managed a few nice fish. Here are a few of my captures, but I have omitted some of them as I wait until my sponsor (FOX Tackle) releases them first.

Here's a couple of doubles caught early morning:

Finally, here's a tail shot from what is now my new PB Common. Once the pics are released by Fox I'll post the full report as this was a classic late night mission, not getting the rods out until 11pm and leaving by 9am the next morning.

Good luck with your own Fall fishing. Plenty of time left to catch a monster or two.

  11. Using PVA mesh the only way to get it to break down slower is to soak it in oil. Obviously, the colder the water temperature the longer it will take to disolve, but if you make the mesh sticks up prior to fishing with an oily mix the mesh usually absorbs the oil which will give a much slower breakdown.

If you are fishing deep water I prefer PVA Solid bags and if you double bag them they will make it all the way to the bottom. You can also do the same as with the mesh and use oils in the mixture and then soak the bags as well.

    Good luck

  12. As an Englishman I do appreciate some of the cracking sarcasm in this thread and a couple made me laugh.

My understanding of the trials and criteria is that Lee tried to hold try-outs over the previous years and had very little interest due to fact there is no prize money and also that many of the costs associated have to be covered by the anglers. Only a couple of people came forward and while all of the USA Team Members are affiliated with one bait company I don't think there were any other anglers who were genuinely interested. Hopefully, this changes in the future and results in a more diverse group of anglers.

Lee has been very open with the criteria and upon request even sent me a copy. Many of the trials include long range casting, so I guess this would rule out a lot of anglers and unfortunately whether you believe there is transparency or not the anglers chosen were the only ones willing to fulfill the requirements. Do I believe this will give the most able and qualified anglers? Probably not, but they were the able to attend trials and also pay the money to make the trip. According to the rules only one angler can be a non naturalized contestant so all of the anglers are either american born or citizens.

I really have no horse in this race, and personally I have no interest in contests. Fishing to me is all about the wild and exploration but I also appreciate how hard it is to organize a team without major backing and sponsorship. Perhaps if we want to improve this process in the future we can help with these areas and for those who think they should have been chosen, then step up to the plate and attend a trial in the future.

Best of luck to Team USA, whatever the result I know it will be an experience of a life time.

  13. Chick peas are a fantastic bait. They are instant, stand up better to other species than corn and also take on flavors and colors very well. I have caught literally 100's of carp on chick peas from 1lb to over 40lb. Simply put, carp like them.

You can use them straight out of the can but they will be soft and not easy to hook or hair rig. Personally I would use the dried versions. Simply cover them in cold water for 12-24 hours. Make sure your container is big enough as they will easily double in size when rehydrated. Boil for 20-30 minutes and then allow to cool.

If you want to add flavors, do it once they are cooled. I like to spice up my chick peas. I add rock salt, tumeric, curry powder and some regular sunflower oil. If the water is colder I will not bother with the oil.

You can store them in the freezer and I will re-use them for a couple of sessions. I usually hair rig a couple and add a piece of fake corn, but I've caught plenty of carp with two chick peas mounted directly on the hook.

    Good luck,

  14. The Blackstone has carp all through the river and canal. Choose an area that gives easy access, unless you have a canoe. The canal section in Uxbridge (there is a visitor's center and parking lot) is easy enough. Plenty of water to go at and tactics do not need to be particularly advanced. The river is also good in that area, but the carp see a lot of pressure and they are not as easy to catch as they are in the canal.

    Good luck.

  15. Over the last month I have not had a day off and with no end in sight I decided I needed to put some effort in to catching a carp or two as the Fall weather arrived.

In the North East the temperatures have dropped by over 20 degrees over the last couple of weeks and that got me itching to get the rods out. Unfortunately, the area I wanted to fish is over 100 miles away from me!! After mulling it over I bit the bullet and decided to drive up to the river after work, not arriving until 9pm or so and only fishing until 7am the next morning as I had to be back for work.

The first session saw me arrive well after dark and I proceeded to get my rods sorted and areas baited very generously with a mixture of Nutrabaits boilies, soaked in Hemp Oil. I was not expected to see much fish activity until after midnight but within an hour I had some very big fish rolling over my baits. I sat on my hands until finally at 4am one of the rods burst into life. After a mega battle a pristine common was put into the retaining sling for pictures at first light and when I got a good look at it I was happy to see it was a two tone fish, pretty rare for the area.

I repositioned the rod and got another 100 baits out over the area, and less than an hour later it ripped off again. This time a heavy plodding fish kept me entertained for a good 10 minutes. Finally, I netted the fish and was happy to get my picture taken with a cracking mirror.

    post-7695-0-90119300-1411062036_thumb.jp

I packed up shortly after first light and took the long drive home, after giving the spots a good dose of bait. I returned 3 days later after a hectic work day and again I put plenty of bait out to attract the carp. I was sure the bait was drawing the fish into the area, but I was also sure that the area was stuffed with natural food (as the last 2 carp were crapping out shells and muscles). Sometimes the fish show up to investigate and then decide to feed on natural food instead.

I still stuck with my boilie approach on one rod, but went with a sneaky tiger nut approach on the second rod. Tigers have always worked better for me in areas where there is an abundance of natural food and this proved to be the case again when my only fish of the session took a liking for them. While not a monster it was one of the prettiest carp I have caught this year.

    post-7695-0-94590000-1411062395_thumb.jp

The rest of the night was frustrating as the chub moved into the area and after catching 6-7 of them on 22mm pop-ups I packed up early as the carp just weren't getting a chance to get to the baits.

My focus is now on a different area a little closer to home. Fall is my favorite time of the year and I hope I can keep putting in the effort, even for short sessions as the rewards are aways worth it.

  16. Always a good idea to break down the net, roll it up a few times and then put the net and fish inside a sling to carry. It saves the net being under pressure and catching fins or scales.

Avoid plastic spreader blocks as they always break. I have 3 nets of varying quality. My favorite is the Fox Warrior which is light weight with excellent mesh and costs around $90. I also have an NGT 42 inch net, metal spreader block and handle which cost less than $50 and for the price it is excellent.

Good luck with whatever you purchase.

  17. Again, I am looking for member pictures to add to the magazine.

These could be scenic, action shots or trophy shots and may be featured in the magazine or as a front cover, dependent on the quality. Please email to naca@carpanglersgroup.com

    Deadline is September 30th.

    Thanks,

    Dean

  18. Calling ALL CAG members.

I am adding a NEW section (one of many) in the upcoming NACA which is entitled "Red Letter Days". I am looking for your memorable sessions when it all went right and for whatever reason it was a resounding success. I want this to be an regular feature but for the upcoming issue I would like it to be focused on a Fall Session.

I already have a couple of contributions but if anyone else would like to send me an article I would love to have them. Please PM me if you are interested and I will forward details of where to send the article and pictures etc.

Our deadline for contributions for the next NACA is September 30th.

    Thanks,

    Dean

  19. Keep the questions coming folks. While we may only answer one or two per issue, it would be great to have a bunch to choose from and pick for each edition. Once we have chosen the topic for the next issue I'll look at sourcing the 'Specialists' and I hope that some of you will be open to an invite to give your point of view :)

  20. Todd,

Worst time of the year to fish in New England at the moment especially with the hot and humid weather we've had the last 2 weeks. Once we have 2 weeks of 70 degree weather and 50 degree nights the fish will be active and your catch rates will improve.

Hang in there and keep the positive thoughts going :)

  21. Here's a couple. Why is it that there are so many experts in carp angling? And, perhaps more pertinent, how is it that no two experts ever agree?? Just pulling yer leg....

I haven't announced who the 'experts' are yet :) I may rephrase it to 'Ask the Specialists' as we can then change them depending on what the questions are! For instance no point in asking someone who fishes lakes a question about tidal rivers. I may also have two specialists who are diametrically opposed so that we get different points of view. The world would be a boring place if we all agreed!
