Heya!- hope you had a great Thanksgiving!- I've followed the ATC for years and always wanted to go but I don't see a list, for next year- is it happening?......MO

I tie my rigs with the hair long enough to hold a third fake corn kernel, but I only use two. However, I have shortened the length of the rig to about 1.5". This allows the rig to float just above the pack. To me, the pre-tied rigs are far too long; I tie all my own and feel I have more consistent catches.....Here's some creek carp from this week, including today's baby carp!

That's why you go to the creeks!!!.......find the holes with riffles filling in, fish no more than halfway through the hole-chum the riffles above the hole, use small 15-30g lead and patience-in summer 10min max before recasting, in winter, 20-30......or use straight sweet corn on a korda crank hook #4 or #6..........you will catch them- no runs, just soft taps and they fight like logs, but still fun!!!......going tomorrow or Monday and I'll show-em......... Welcome to CAG!- you will find all of the tips and advice right here!- You are in a good spot- Texas has the numbers and sizes to keep ya happy!!!...... MO

It is great to be in the stands watching this unfold!!......I on the other hand haven't had the time or places to fish this fall. It actually makes each session more important though, and, in the end, fishin's fishin!!... Great job again!!!!... MO

So.....the start of my CAG Fall 2019 started with a blip....fished a local lake where I had caught fish up to 26lbs, but alas, lost one in a snag with the rig- carp 1, MO 0, then hooked a solid 8-10lbr and it ran along the shore into a snag and was gone, carp 2, MO 0, then hooked a little guy, brought to shore but off at the bank; carp 3, MO 0. Hooked a 4th and final smallie and was off halfway to the shore; carp 4, MO 0.....so............went back to the creeks and caught 6 fish, my first CAG fish at 8lb, 13-8, 8-6, and 12-0, and a little 5-6, but of all things, a bighead carp!-wouldn't have believed it, but hooked like a common- this is a small creek but it eventually runs to the Missouri. This was the only hit on a panko, dried bloodworm pack bait, and it beat the daylights out of me and escaped!..........so, my four didn't even cross 45lbs!!!.......oh well, just getting started.... MO

WOW- And I haven't even started fishin!!!! :0 Well done all!... MO

Well..........not going to touch that total, but WELL DONE JEROME!!!!!!

.........they were just looking to make money-didn't know anything about the rods, fishing, etc., If they did, you'd never see them again....so I doubt they're damaged, and you may just recover all of them. I'd check all your tackle/bait shops as well..... Just maddening!.....Unfortunate, as they likely have/can afford cell phones, a car, tools to open the garage, etc. so they didn't "need" the money, they just wanted more. I could almost see if a person stole a rod to fish for food/family-My brother and I give away rods/gear routinely to people/kids who really need/can't afford but also to people "just for"..........so sad. Good luck!!!....... MO

I have good luck with sweet corn on hair rigs with pack bait. My usual method is to have the hair about an inch long and bait it with two fat, solid kernels from the can. Too long of a hair is counter productive. I push the hook in the pack leaving my two kernels on the hair on the outside of the pack.
I'm not a believer in leaving the line in the water "for hours". I get suspicious after 30 - 45 minutes, especially if I've twitches on the line, or decent activity earlier in the session, and will check to see if the corn in still on. Sometimes it is, sometimes it's not. I don't mind recasting like that, because every time I send another ball of pack out, I figure It is some more chum out there. After you get to know your water, you generally get to know a sweet spot and keep casting to that spot. Have a certain target, a tree or house or whatever on the other side that you aim at, so your rig goes out to the same small area each time.
Those little plastic bait stops for the hairs were a pain for me when I started using hairs. I hated them. I tried a few things and finally came up with the idea of using grass. Cut the round grass (about a foot or so) that has the little one inch tassels on the top that are around half the diameter of a toothpick. Cut the tassel off and let them dry. Of course you can use them 'green' too. When baiting up just push the piece of grass through the hair, push the bait (corn) up against it, lightly hold the hair to keep a little pressure on the bait, pull the grass back to the edge of the corn, then snip the long end of the grass off against the corn with toenail/fingernail clippers. Simple, easy, and quick. Even with cold fingers. There's always a dozen or so stems of grass in my tackle box all the time. After a bit you'll get good at holding on to the long end of the grass when clipping it, because if you don't it will take off, never to be found again.
And those toenail clippers are a handy item to always have along. They are a god-send for snipping tag ends off fishing line when tying knots or cutting line. For mono line anyway. 'Better have a sharp knife along for braid.

Yea, I agree- I used grass stems all the time for the sweet corn, but now use the plastic stops for the fake corn- grass stems don't work well as you will lose the majority of your fake corn when you hook a fish.....too expensive (or I am cheap :)).................

That's gonna be tough fishing without any water!. wish I could go but will be at conference....... MO

I started with sweet corn on the hair, but after losing it either to fish, weakening off the hook, etc., I gravitated to fake corn. I haven't seen a difference, and it save time and hassle of constantly replacing it, especially at night when you simply can't see as well. I think the carp "mouth" the fake corn and get hooked easy enough. The key is placement of your pack bait where the carp are; my packs consist of either a strawberry panko, bird seed, sweet corn, lemon panko, or soybean panko, but will shortly try using condensed milk with sweet corn juice to mix the pack.....MO

Though it was boiling outside (98F and 105F heat index) I decided to try one of my most consistent creeks, and ugghh- very high and muddy, but, I was here and had an hour, so why not. AND one hit, one fish and wow, wow, wow!- this one shone 10 yards out- a large (10lb) Ghost- almost snow white- called him Casper and let him go-great fighter and just a nice quick set!.........My best ghost by far!!..........

So, the IGFA has grand slams for "popular" fish species (Bass, trout, inshore saltwater fish, etc.- three species in a day, 4 species in a day, etc. ). I had some time at a conference I was presenting at in Utah, so I got a guide and we went dry fly fishing, and nymphing. Well, I caught a bucket -list fish my brother and I only dreamed of- Grayling!!!!... We always thought we'd have to go to Alaska for them, but I caught more grayling than any other fish, in creeks no one would think held fish....The day proceeded with rainbow, cutthroat, brook, grayling and the trip ended with a fair number of brown trout!!!......Interestingly we found a chunk from the middle of the body of a very dark carp- no head, no tail, floating in the river............. an eagle or osprey maybe................within 48 hours of returning, just had to go creeking for carp though, and, uh, cattin too!... .....oh, and the conference was good too!.... MO

Nicely done!!

Very nicely done!!!

Hi all!!!.....
Well after a short trout trip in Utah (grayling, brook, rainbow, cutthroat and browns), came back to creekin-new spot, and less than 15 minutes, had 3, lost 1, then constant action for the next 2 hours!!! AND 3 DOUBLES (only took 2 rods)....biggest was 12-2!!!
I've never been skunked in the creeks that I can remember, so if your sittin there reading this or looking out your window, GET TO THE CREEKS and CARP!!!....Life's too short!!
Sorry if the videos don't come through!!

I’m getting closer with this nice Buffalo. Not a super hard hit and he didn’t fight much until I got him 15 feet from the shore, then he fought. My scale I just bought was broke, so I’m not sure of his weight. I’m thinking 15-20 pounds.
Ummmm, looks like a grass carp to me Nanook. Good job!!!

Winter creek carpin!

In my experience in creeks, the bite is very slow, very subtle in the winter. I switch from my 3oz method leads heavily packed on 9ft rods to using very little pack bait (I use the 15-30g NGT method leads and only cover the ribs), ultralight rods (5-6' Pfleuger trions), 8lb line and fish the holes that are several feet (5-10') holes. I use a pod or bank sticks but no bite alarms-very seldom do I get runs or bites strong enough to trip the alarms. The fish are very slow and I think that though they eat, they mouth the bait more slowly simply due to the cold/slow metabolism. You have to constantly watch the line and pick up when there's a slow short pull................again, just my experience, but I'm pretty consistent. if the water's high or murky, I catch very few................good luck- patience and perseverance win out!- Its not like they crawl out of the water in winter-they are there!
