  1. The Asian carp moniker makes very little sense. There is no meaningful commonality between grass carp, silver carp, bighead carp and other "xxx carp" denominations. Yeah, ok, they are all parts of the cyprinids family, but there are more than 1000 living species of those! Just consider the fact that silver carp (the madly jumping ones) eat plankton through filtering (like a whale!), that grass carp feed primarily on weeds (like cows), that bighead carp feed primarily on snails while common carp are true omnivores (like human beings!). Fact is all those "xxx carp" are just widely different species, in physical aspect, behavior, feeding patterns, etc.

If I remember well, Iain Sorrell wrote a cogent article clarifying the matter in a NACA article. I can't find it though...

  2. Hi Tyler,

I'm sorry, I didn't notice this thread before. It seems that you decided to fish on the Canada side. Then yeah, all I know is Long Sault, which is stunningly beautiful and can deliver a lot of fish, but the average size isn't that impressive. I only spent a few days out there a decade ago, so I am not a specialist by any means. Did you go speak to the Long Sault motel folks? They used to be of good advice - yes, for carp fishing. Between Long Sault and Montreal, public access is hard to find from my limited experience. I didn't follow the shore towards Kingston.

Now if you decide to go fish the US side (e.g. Waddington), then I can be of more help and connect you with some knowledgeable locals (yes, Ed Sheffield included). Let me know. In general, August is the worst month when it comes to weeds (and the heat), better go another month.

Have you tried an iPhone remote for taking pictures? This might be an ideal option as you can hold the fish AND then operate the remote when you are ready to take a photo.

Thanks a lot for the advice. I bought one, received it this morning and it works great to remotely trigger either picture taking or video recording. Very cool!

  4. Hm, rule #5 is back to overly stringent constraints... Here is the text we had for the (canceled) Spring event:

    5.     Upload your entries within 48 hours of capture and certainly no more than 5 days during the period of the competition. All uploads must be completed by midday the day after the competition ends.

Seemed much more realistic to me. People may fish for several days out of coverage... Might be clearer to say:

Upload your entries preferably within 48 hours of capture and certainly no more than 5 days during the period of the competition.
