Lots of credit card fraud recently

Spoon

Question

Several carp anglers (including myself) have had their credit cards used fraudulently within last few weeks or days. I found out about this from Facebook. I had not used my card for a few months. Is it a coincidence that several carp angler were hit in a short time period, or has someone hacked CAG or an online tackle store?

Just confirmed by our Systems Admin, the Resistance Tackle Web Site has not been compromised, nor has the Admins system. Resistance is clean. However I still recommend only using the PayPal option at check out. Thank you everyone for bringing this to our attention and for your patience while we proofed our system....Dennis and Andy.

Thank you for confirming that. I'm not trying to accuse anyone here, but from what I read online on this subject, a lot of the times it's not outside hackers who forced their way into a database, but some disgruntled kid with too much access, who just got canned from his job for watching porn on company time & machines, and decides to help himself to a nice "severance package" by making a copy of the clients' database and selling it online. No way to trace/detect that after the fact...

John said: "I have used Wacker, BCT and Resistance - and so far, fingers crossed, have not been hit (though i'm now checking on a daily basis) ! I would highly suspect that the root cause of this activity is coming from another source, be that a virus, screen scraper, trojan, a re-directed URL that wasn't noticed, etc. Of course, now I will have cursed myself and be beaten to death with fraudulent charges!

I would highly recommend that you ensure your virus definitions are up to date with whatever s/w you use, be that Windows Defender, Norton, McAfee et, that the s/w is actually enabled if you have it, that you do not click on "links" in emails, even from people you know, and that you are diligent in checking URL's on websites you visit. Always manually type in a website URL, rather than click on a link - especially for any site that requires you to enter credentials for identification."

The computer shop in town reformatted my hard drive and upgraded me to Kaspersky anti virus and stuff (I had to pay for this...no more freebies...you get what you pay for), and ensured my firewall was operating/set properly.. Over the LAST MONTH Kaspersky has intercepted two (2) different trojans trying to infect me via web sites...these were the same kind of infections I had last year which, coincidentally or not, occurred around the time of credit card problems. Same here, I had system freezes, lockups and redirects...data was definitely being transferred somewhere.

I have had my PC checked again by US Tech Support (formerly Cyber Defender ) and there in nothing untoward that would have eminated from this end. It is just too coincidental for hackers to simply pick on unsuspecting targets, when as far as I can see the ,connection from reading all the reports, indicates carp anglers share the greater percentage of fraudulent hits. THIS IS THE COMMON DENOMINATOR. What other reason could be there be ? Perhaps they do not believe in catch and release?.

We (carp anglers) are the common denominator because we are on a carp fishing forum. If this was basketweaving.com than the common denominator would be different

Is is possible people picked up a virus through facebook? Since a lot of things install such as a game or whatnot could that not access your info from your computer and then use it and since we all share things between us that could be why so many carpers got hit?

I stated that the carp anglers were the common denominator in this case. I do believe that there are carp anglers who have been hit even though they are not CAG members. What I am saying is that all the carp anglers do at some time make purchases from the limited carp tackle stores here in the USA and the answer to whoever is hacking, does so through one or more of these facilities. I do not believe that anyone at CAG is responsible and neither will I point fingers at any store in particular. I speak from experience in law enforcement in Great Britain, of twenty seven years. With foreign countries being able to hack into government offices in the USA, I can say that hackers will find a way to access the tackle stores here without the knowledge of the proprietors. This has nothing to do with the common denominator of CAG and certainly nothing to do with basket/weaving.

I don't do facebook, never even looked at anything there, just don't go there ever. So for me facebook is no part of my problem unless someone got it from facebook and then gave it to me?

What business would really be willing to come forward and admit that your credit card security was at risk at some point in time while you were making a transaction with them? It would probably mean the beginning of the end for that entity. I also agree with Grahame that the source of all this may be completely unaware that they were hacked and compromised. Trying to find the source, as logical as that may be, will, in my opinion, yield fruitless results. I would hope that those of us who were victimized will learn from the experience and do what we can to further protect ourselves.

Have you seen anything like this before.....with this number.....with the links we all have, at the same time? Remember in the short past those who posted had their e-mail addresses visable here and it was and still is common for all of us who did to get solicitations from other carp businesses, events and others who took the time to look though the site here. amd copy that info. I get e-mails and entry from dozens of folks and I have never bought anything on line with a credit card.....ever, and the only place that e-mail has ever been public was here. It's very possible that one of those companys data base was compromised or the info was taken with the plan to do wrong. It;s not an accusation of who did what.....just a reminder of the need to be careful and to keep personal info and even e-mail addresses private.

I personally called Paul at Wacker yesterday and Magda at World Classic Baits today to tell them about the issue on the forum, both said they were unaware of it when I called........might want to let the rest know to so they can check their situation as well as other members who might not have seen this.

Larry, my point was this, saying that cag or carp anglers are the common denominator isnt a good saying seeing as we r all on a carp website therefore we are all into the same thing. For example, i was heavy on another forum about a year ago who also thought it was funny that many of the people on that site had issues with cc fraud, well the culprit had nothing at all to do with that site. My thoughts are actually looking outside of the carp world. For me, i dont look at this as a carp thing. We r only, common because of the site we freaquent.

Your e-mail address only show if you selected for it to show, and it still shows Your Profile

The update just limited it to your profile so that I save load time and resources on the pages loading.

I awoke this morning and as usual began to check the forum and began to read about the number of anglers who had been the victims of fraudulent card use. I quickly checked with my banks and discovered that three of my cards had also been hacked, totalling thousands of dollars for goods or services supplied or requested, fraudulently, within the last week. I reported this via the CAG forum and to say the least, I was pissed ! I stated that the common denominator,as far as I could see,was that the victims were all carp anglers. I later saw that one reply to my statement ,stated that the common denomitator was CAG. I have refuted this reply by stating that other anglers not members of CAG have also been hacked and not to imply otherwise. I would not point fingers at tackle dealers but stated that whoever was responsible was targetting the dealers who may be unaware that they had been compromised. I now read that the forum member who disagreed with my common denominator is now saying that he feels the hacker(s) are not within the carp world but is continuing to say the one thing in common is the site we frequent.

At no time did I imply that the hacker(s) were from within the carp world and I totally disagree that the cause is because we all frequent this CAG site. I have said before and I will say again that The common denominator is that we are all carp anglers who shop online for products.

I see it as 12 pages of support for those that have been hit!............NOT CRAP!!!!

You are lucky not to have been hit, & i agree, i don't think this is a carp or CAG based problem.

No, not a carp angler or CAG problem but a general global "internet user" problem. One of the recent intercepted Trojan infections tried to come in via one of my amateur astronomy websites...the largest such forum community in the USA if not globally. My bank informed that this kind of fraud is a BILLION+ $ annual business. Go ahead and look for value and security 'net surfing and purchasing but DO NOT skimp on personal computer protection and monthly statement scrutiny.

So true. People complain because they must pay a couple bucks a year to have a good PC security suite. Then wonder on they get infected.

I only use one of two, Kaspersky or Bitdefender. The top two in the world over tha last 10+ years in all catogories.

Save, protect and back up.

I agree with Willem. Kaspersky is fantastic. Never had a problem and they notify instantly of any virus or any kind of intrusion. I have purchased from most of the vendors mentioned and recently K-1 and didn't have any problems.

Hey man , good to see ya still around and didn't get hit .
